I plan to send my mother to visit family in Ocala thru Amtrak from Charlotte, NC. I tried getting tickets, but did not find a direct trip. Instead of sending her to Orlando - what are other stations closer to Ocala that I can look into?

Unfortunately, Ocala closed it's Amtrack train station service several years ago and no longer stops here. Orlando is going to be the closest stop. By car, the stations are about 1 1/2 - 2 hours apart. You might check for bus/coach service from Orlando to Ocala. I can't remember the name of the company, but it does travel regularly on that route.

Have you checked with Greyhound bus? They seem to stop everywhere and anywhere. The bus drivers are very good about keeping an eye on seniors.

I just went to Charlotte from Ocala (and back) via Amtrak. From Charlotte ...The Silver Star stops in Jacksonville where you get off and Amtrak has their own Motorcoach Bus waiting for you that then drops you off at the Ocala Amtrak station. They make two other short stops between Jacksonville and Ocala - but a very comfortable and pleasant bus trip. It is Amtrak's own private bus, not a Greyhound.. (My concern was that the bus would leave if the train was late; but Amtrak told me it waits for the Silver Star). Easy trip from Ocala to Charlotte and vice-versa. Put in the parameters in the Amtrak website and they'll give you the details.. costs and times, etc.
