We lived in Ocala for a year. Compared to other cities, it's just "okay". Ocala Utility Dept are thieves! Gainesville and Ocala have the highest utilities I've ever seen. Police and fire in Ocala are some of the lowest paid in the state. We watched the crime map in our neighborhood go from dark green to yellow in 6 months. Almost daily, someone's house was getting broken into. I used to take my kids to a wonderful park but stopped going due to all the drug deals going down in the bathroom across from the park. I had a man pull in next to me and try to lure me over to his opened car trunk in a Publix parking lot. I've never been so scared in my entire life, and since then, will not go grocery shopping at night. We watched Ocala go from better than GSV to just as bad as GSV in one year. Maybe I'm used to the East Coast of Central Fla, but for such a "country conservative" town, it's disappointing. When you mix the crime, shady characters, cost of living, utilities, sink holes and guarded attitudes of most of the ppl that live there, I have no desire to live in that area again.

Ocala can be pretty rough. My wife and I left in 2006 but still have family in the area at this time. Biggest problem I had with the area was low pay, my wife has a degree and I was ex military with industry certifications in mechanics and refrigeration and we just couldnt seem to make enough.

Being born and raised in New York the cost of living in Ocala was much cheaper obviously but salaries didnt seem to match even at a lower COL.

Crime seemed to be a concern but to a lesser degree then say Brooklyn.

The problem with Ocala is that it can be so much more then what it is but the geezers who sit on the board dont want change and without change its hard for progression to happen.

On a positive note Ocala has some pretty areas, ok shopping, at Christmas they light up rhe square which is nice , if you like Gator football it is a place to be.

I am a 23 year old professional female looking to relocate to Ocala. I am an equestrian and avid animal lover (I will be ringing 3 dogs and 2 cats) which is one reason I was drawn to Ocala. My main concern is that there won't be a high population of people close to my age because there are so many 55+ communities and people retiring here. Don't get me wrong I am quiet and laid back, I am not looking for downtown night clubs just something where I will be able to get antiquated with people and build relationships.

Do you own a horse yourself? I do not get the sense you are working directly for the equestrian community

There are equestrian communities in the exurbs of any major city( Jax, Orlando, Tampa, West Palm is where I personally know people who have horses)

Gainesville is about 30 minutes from Ocala and the University of Florida is there, 50K college kids and graduate students

Ocala does not have the professional opportunities of a larger city

No I am aspiring to eventually work for a federal prison and FCC Coleman is about 45 mins from there so I am trying to stay withing that circumference. I have a degree in Social Work so I'm not particularly looking for city life to work. I am mostly concerned with being able to meet people because I am moving down there alone with no friends or family.
