Now, bgmiami, here is a Jewish guy, Paul Simon, introducing the Edwin Hawkins Singers performing O Happy Day. How could anyone find this objectionable? Perhaps you want to report it to YouTube and have it censored? Maybe they should just sing it at home or in a church somewhere?

Yes, please. Just what Ocala needs! I'd pay to see O Happy Day done with a swish down the boulevard. Why settle for being uplifted when you can be Absolutely Fabulous?

Where do you get "racist" from? You didn't even read what she wrote. She didn't mention race. You just read "Christian" and started foaming at the mouth. Living among Christians is wonderful. It's like everyone here is family.

The lady your bigoted rant is targeted at got up and left so she could be among like-minded people, and here you are, telling her to leave again! Forget it! Conservatives and Christians don't have to leave Marion County. We are welcome here. We are accepted. You, I'm not so sure about. You would really hate hearing Christian music in grocery stores and restaurants.
I lived and worked in the Florida Panhandle for over a decade. But I also worked in Metro Miami, FL. South FL is like Latin America. The FL Panhandle is like a Confederate Bible-Belt Protestant Region - radically different from South FL. The annual FSU-Miami game is like a clash of cultures - descendants of White Confederates in the fan base versis the Latin/Caribbean fan base of Metro Miami. That stadium with such a difference in culture, ethnicity, political inclination, religion, etc. gets really intense. I've witnessed it and don't want to be in that stadium again. It gets harsh - it's more than just a football rivalry (in my opinion).

I'm moderately conservative and preferred Central FL. I have since moved back to Phoenix. But I know Florida.

If you are Jewish, why are you giving Christianity lessons? Who do you think you are? You don't know anything about the subject. Your presumptuousness is exceeded only by your bigotry and hostility. Let's make a deal. Keep the Christianity lessons to yourself, and I won't try to teach you about halakha.

Sorry you don't like hearing Christian music, but people who run businesses have a right to play whatever they want. You must get furious when you go to Thai restaurants and see idols and incense.

To address the original question: The bellwether election to watch that will determine if FL will go liberal is, of course, the gubernatorial election.

Gillum--he is the mayor of Tallahassee (my current abode) is I think it safe and accurate to say, a far left candidate. He wants to raise corporate taxes, wants to abolish ICE (even though that's not a state perview) wants free health care, wants all the liberal positions.

DeSantis is the Trump-endorsed conservative and is pretty much the opposite of all of Gillum's positions.

So FL voters have a clear choice and which guy wins will determine if FL stays relatively conservative or if it goes liberal with higher taxes---which almost to a certainty will mean a state income tax some time down the road.

One thing lacking in the media coverage is the fact that Gillum and his fellow Tallahassee city council members have been and still are under an FBI investigation for corruption. Gillum has refused to come clean and produce the relevant receipts from trips he made to NYC and Costa Rica in the company of what turned out to be FBI undercover agents. He also has been caught abusing city parking at our airport---sounds like small potatoes except to the rest of us regular folks who actually have to pay.

Then there was the incident where he used city funds to purchase an e-mail software package from the Democrat National Committee which he proceeded to use for his own fund raising---illegally---until he was caught at it. He then blamed it all of a subordinate, gave the money back and was never charged with a crime. which is like robbing a bank, then changing your mind and giving the money back the next day, as if that erased your crime.

That's Gillum corruption---the short version.

Beware Florida

Florida's constitution specifies that there is no state income tax in the State of Florida. The only way a state income tax can be added in Florida is via an election where 60% or more of Floridia's vote to ratify the FL constitution in order to add a state income tax.

The governor and/or the government cannot modify the state constitution. It must go out to the people in the entire state for a vote.

And that's my point--if FL turns left to a sufficient degree, then 60% will indeed vote for that income tax.

If it stays relatively right, no state income tax.

It all depends of the long-range voting trends.

Irma and Maria drove a huge number of Puerto Ricans into Florida, and Puerto Ricans are generally way out on the left. Combined with continuing new arrivals from the north, aliens who vote illegally in our elections, and liberal retirees who vote here AND in their home states, they will push Florida toward socialism.

Socialism isn't necessarily bad. Roosevelt's New Deal helped get us out of the Great Depression. Roosevelt also gave us Social Security, so millions of seniors did not have to live in poverty. Johnson gave us Medicare, Medicaid and SS Disability so seniors, the poor and the disabled could have healthcare. Medicare also covers children under the age of 22 with disabling conditions. Socialism is Meals on Wheels for the sick elderly so they don't starve to death. Socialism is Food Stamps. Socialism is health programs for children. There are some very good aspects to a government that provides socialist programs to it's citizens. Socialism doesn't mean a communist takeover of the country.

bgmiami: You've got it wrong----Socialism is where Government owns the means of production--the mines, the steel industries.
What you are describing are Public Goods provided by our government, not Socialism.
And, if you want to stick to the strict definition of a Public Good---something that only Government can provide (like the US Navy, or the provision of a National Park System) you can eliminate things like food stamps.

Why? Because on the country that has as much food as the US does and has a large number of good neighbors, a Federal food stamp program could easily be replaced by local food banks (also Meals on Wheels) and there would be no need for government involvement.

Having said that, a left-lurching Governor like we might be on the verge of electing will certainly make Florida's economy more resemble Venezuela, where actual Socialism is destroying the economy.
