Can anyone help me? I live in S. Florida and relocating to Ocala ( Marion Oaks ). How is this city, are there any jobs available with good pay? Is it true what they say about sexual predators and living animals in the area? ( Snakes, bob cats, scorpions, racoons, etc...)......Is it a safe place to live? I fear for my safety and the safety of my family......please, I need to know before closing on the house next month......thanks ya'll
I live in PA but own a rental in Marion Oaks. My opinion is that it is very nice, although some people on this board have stated otherwise. As I do not live there, I cannot comment on the jobs or sexual predators, but I have also heard the stories about the animals. From a northerner's point of view, I think the animals you mentioned are all over Florida in areas which are primarily wooded like Marion Oaks. Once, when I was staying in my house for a week, I did find a dead scorpion, but have not seen any of the other animals. Marion Oaks is so big it's like any city, there are good sections, and some which may be not so good. If you're buying a house in an area of newly built homes, which typically are larger and more expensive, it will probably be nice there. There is a police station right in the development, in the older section. I have read about more crime in the older section, along with some of the homes which are more isolated. I had an attempted break in and vandalism when my home was more isolated, but now I am surrounded by new homes, and there doesnt seem to be a problem. I plan on retiring in the future and I would like living there. My biggest complaint in the Ocala area is the traffic congestion, but luckily from Marion Oaks you can avoid alot of it by going out 484 to 200 to go shopping. There is alot of building going on on rt 200. Hope this helps.
Marion Oaks IS what you read. I have posted pics and you can check the state of FL sex-offender lists (zip code 34473).
We have Bob-cats (see them in my yard at dusk and dawn) the kids see them when they walk to the bus too. We have Rattle snakes, Turkey, Deer, Bears, Coons, Armadillos, and so on… still very woodsy in most of Marion Oaks. I like the critters!!

Roads are poor (my cars are getting rattles!! Hahaha)
Marion Oaks is not a city, township, village or the like, it is a sub-division developed 30 years ago by Deltona Corp… It is Ocala.
I can say that the only public school right now is pretty nice, over-crowded, but nice. The new Middle school is underway (thank goodness). They also have a good number of ESL teachers.

The current Middle and High schools are in Dunnellon (about 20 miles west).
Homes had sold in here for roughly $110K and less just a few years ago, but they have jumped on the over-priced band wagon here too. Jobs do not pay equal to housing (but that is all over the state). The older section is tightly compacted and a bit dirty looking.
This is a pic is in the newer section:

There is Once Grocery store (Win-Dixie), Dollar General and a post office inside of a video rental store.
It is not that bad, if you are used to that sort of living, it really is like being out in the sticks. I have included pictures. I am sure you will like it, again, not so bad if you like that kind of life style. Ths kids complain (but they are all used to being in town) LOL

Walmart, Bob Evans, IHop, Beals, and so on are roughly 11 miles away.
Remember, always check county tax records / GSI links to find what the property you are looking into sold for over the past few years, you might be shocked!
I just moved to Marion Oaks a year ago (across from the waterfall). I love it. Fresh air, peace and quiet & neighbors keep to themselves. But yesterday, I found out that a CVS is to be built right behind my home. I am so upset. How can the city allow a business to be built so close to the homes??? I thought that area (woods/nature) was under some type of protection. And isnt there a law about how far from a family home a business can build? I was told that there would be only a 50 ft buffer between this business & my property line. I am so upset & heart broken. The view that brought me peace and pleasure will now be of a business and its parking lot. Not to mention that I will loose privacy from two angles on my property. Then there's the noise from cars & the possible trash that will be left on the ground to be picked up by the wind and onto my property. My dogs will be constantly barking & my child will no longer be as safe. Could someone please help me in finding out if this could be stopped? Or if I was right to think that the area was supposed to have been left untouched?

marion oaks does have sexual predators, and wild animals, and a lot of gangs.
I just moved to the newest section of Marion Oaks and it's very nice and quiet. I would definitely not move in here unless I could see the area first though, as Marion Oaks is a VERY big subdivision. Some areas are really nice, some just ok, and some you couldn't pay me to live in.
Don't do it! The area is horrible. Think about it... people keep saying that there are good areas and bad areas in the subdivision... and how far apart are they? Not very very. If one side of a street is rich, and the other is poor, where do you think the poor will go to steal and commit crime? There are a lot of much nicer areas in Ocala. Make a better choice.

Where do you teach? Because I certainly do not want you teaching my son. Just because someone is poor does not make them thieves. I could go on and on but what would be the point you already have your mind made up. I feel sorry for those of you that put people in boxes, the experiences you miss... I pray that we don't move into where ever you teach.
LOL wow. When my boyfriend and I would tell certain people we were moving to Marion Oaks we would get the same negative reaction from snobby people followed by comments like "well, it's a 'mixed crowd' and sometimes worse comments. These weren't our friends mind you, the snobby real estate agent we were using to find us a place and my boyfriends boss. It became clear these people are racist. Yes, the older section is filled with lower income people. I live in the newer area and there are African Americans and Hispanics but who cares?! Everyone in my neighborhood is nice, takes care of there house and their lawns and are generally just decent people. More than I can say for the all-white (trash) filled neighborhood I used to live in Beverly Hills (which by the way, has it's nice parts as well). I have found in this area, what you see is generally what you get. If it looks like a shady area, it is, if it looks decent, it is. I am posting this for anyone who may read this thread in the future.
