Hi! We live in New England and are considering buying a vacation home in the Ocala area. We are not familiar with area but based on some real estate sites that we looked at we were just wondering why some of the new homes are going for around $80,000? Are those neighborhoods unsafe or are the homes in those areas mostly rental?
Please let us know what areas around Ocala would be good to look at?

Thank You!

Hey, where in NE are you from? I moved here from Maine about eight years ago. I'd be more than happy to talk about communities if you give me a little more info about what you are looking for.

80,000 can't be a very big house and might not be in a good area. I would suspect it may be just a basic house with cheap lighting, carpet, vinyl and appliances. It may or may not have a one car garage. Also it might be a foreclosure in rough shape or way out in the forest. Our house is for sale at $230,000 for 1971 sqft. 3/2/2, fenced yard, tile, custom lighting, large back porch screened in, etc as an example.

Good luck getting $230,000. Unless you are on 5 acres, houses are selling for about $80-90 a square foot. That puts you at about $160k

Ocala is a great place to live and vacation! I can send pictures and discuss further if you contact me directly. Prices are the best they have been in a long time.

Unless you are strictly looking at real estate values, I cant imagine why one would want a vacation home here.
Real estate prices are still rather inflated, the property taxes have not kept pace with the downtrend that there is in price, if you live within the confines of Ocala Electric the bills are HORRIFIC, and it is at least an hours drive to anything an one might be interested in.
I know the real estate folks need to make a living,(as do I, as an interior designer) but lets get real.
Marion County leads the state in unemployment, and Florida is leading the way for the rest of the states......it doesnt take too much to figure out where the epicenter of the unemployment crisis is.......there are homeless folks even on the edges of the best neighborhoods here these days.
