That's just part of the HIGH cost of living in FL. Wait until people dig a little and find out about the cost of Ins for a home and property there. Sometimes snow-birding is the way to go.

I had a (more obvious) leak at a home I bought a few years back and the connector to the city water supply was busted. It was basically a fight as the city stated (correctly) it wasn't their connector so I had to have the builder send somebody out. It took a day or so...needless to say I did complain and got compensated for my water leaking into the street for 2 days all told but that water bill was probably only $225 or so.

mluciano's leak may be a bit smaller and less obvious but getting somebody out there ASAP to take a look would be a very good idea.
Yes, I heard they now have devices where they can pick up the sound of the water and not have to dig up your whole yard.

Sure they do, but it isn't cheap to hire someone to use it on your yard. I think it uses ground penetrating radar (but I could be mistaken).

Yeh, FL is surprisingly expensive. I am amazed so many people on fixed incomes would retire in FL, crime is a problem too.

Unfortunately, crime follows the population no matter where you live and is random in most cases. I don't know where FL ranks in the national statistics, compared to other states.

Don't foget that physical crimes are not the only type with the advent of cyber crimes. Crooks just come up with new, clever ways to take advantage of the helpless.

I don't think all of them really do their homework before making the move. We did extensive research and talked to many many people living there before deciding. We weren't taking the move lightly.

Those moving there are all excited about the move and don't realize what they got into until they've signed on the dotted line and the moving van drives off. They're also going by their parents and grandparents generation when FL was a real bargain. That's still in their subconscious minds as it was in mine... but times change. And crime wasn't such a issue in those past days either.

And I'm sure many are so financially comfortable the cost of living there don't matter to them.

You really can't look at costs for some particilar towns and then say the whole state has a high cost of living. Each town and even different parts of the same town can have different costs.

I pay approx $25/mo for city water, and my insurance is approx $1200/yr total for a nice sized coastal home directly on salt water. Electric in the highest/hottest summer months is approx $120 but goes down to $50-$60/mo for other months. This is for 3500 sq ft under A/C. Auto insurance is approx $350/yr per vehicle. I don't think this is a high cost of living at all.

What town or towns are you talking about? We didn't come across any place with those prices in decent neighborhoods.
