Funny how I'm not depressed. lol I love it here. Glad I moved here too. No regrets. I guess it all depends on what type of person you are and you sound like you are an OUTGOING person, WILLING to find and do different things and Ocala DOES have it.

When I told firends I was moving here their responses were, uhhhhh it's soooo sloooow there and booooring, why? Glad I didn't listen to any of them, even forums. Now my friends visit and say Ohhhhhh it's soooo nice here, it's better then where we are, blah blah blah. I tell them I don't want to hear it and don't move here with negative attitude. If it's so bad then people should leave and never come back that's all. It might have not worked for them because as some they expect to be served on a silver platter. What doesn't work out for one, may work for someone else. And you'll never know if you don't find out either. Some people are just so stuck that they don't know how to go about making things better, so they sit and complain.

I guess if you are YOUNG you can find fault in anything, but if you're settled then it would be less annoying. Maybe for the dating sceen it's not all that great , but where is it great to date? I don't truat anyone these days, bunch of crazies out there. LOL For a family life, I think its perfect. That is, until they get to be teens. But come on, where in what state is there tons of things for teens to do? Everywhere you go you hear the same thing. "Teens are bored and have nothing to do". Ask someone who has a teen living in a different state. That's why parents put their kids into some kind of sport or academic to fill in those empty boring times. I say teens shoudn't be out galavanting anyway. They should be into their studies and activities such as an art or sport. And if parents can't afford that, then go take a walk with them, tech them how to cook, ride bike, kick a ball around, there just isn't any excuse for not being able to go to a park and play sports with your own kid. As for parents saying they are bored, their hands should be busy enough if not in working, involved with their children & not trying to relive their late teens or early years before childbearing.

Wow, I go to more than Chic Filet, Burger King, Publix and Kmart. Actually I haven't gone to Chic Filet at all. Why because there are OTHER places to go to eat. TONS! BTW I eat mostly at home. I hardly ever go to those artery clogger places.

And as for shopping, there are a TON of stores to shop in. There is a Macy, Target, TJ maxx, Sears, JC Pennys, Dillards, Kohls and MANY more. rt 200 for one has tons of places. Geeze people, get out often?

Don't get discouraged about high crime blah blah blah hoopla. Ocala is one the safest you'll encounter. I personally think anyone moving to Fl should stay away from Miami and Orlando. Too fast paced with too many tourist. People seem to forget that Florida was originally meant for the retirees. Now people have moved their familes to Fl and EXPECT Fl to change for them. You can't expect to flaten out the woods and not expect deer to roam on your property right? Ocala like any other place, has it's good and bad. I personally think those who have made poor choices in life and are miserble don't want anyone to join in, which is a good thing. That's why YOU have to make of it, what you may. Come here and stay for a bit, and YOU make that decision.

As for Gainsville it about 45 mins tops and maybe you can find a job there and drive it. It's a busier town but you get to come back to Ocala for peace and quiet. Pssssttt LOTS of stores there too. Food and shopping, Gator games, Museum and guess what? It gets you out of Ocala. Woo hoo.
Sometimes you have to get up, to get out. Who says you have to stay in Ocala because you live there?

The only thing I will say is to make sure you are settled here with a job, because as in ALL other places jobs are too little to come by. Make sure the company you are looking into is steady. See if your company can relocate your position. Or if you can, open up your own business. Hey if it's large enough, it will supply Ocala with jobs! Right?

The one place you don't want to move to is Orlando. DON"T That's were most of the crimes are. Turn on the news and practically everything is happening in Orlando and I don't mean Disney either. Oh and that's about 1 hr and 1/2 away. Woo, such a looong trip for some. Weeew Some people should try to stand on the NYC trains for over that. They wouldn't last. Get in your car, go to the place, get in your car, go home. Get in your car go to the place, get in your car and go home. Lol I like that i'm here in Ocala and CAN drive to Orlando or any where I want just to get away, then you can leave all that behind and come to my Beautiful Neighborhood here in Ocala.

Pleanty of diverity if you're talking about race or places to go. I haven't come across anyone yet that has made me feel uncomfortable or haven't heard of anyone talking negative about others. There hasn't been a place I need to go to and not find it here in Ocala.
Like I said you make of it what you want.

It's hot and steaming in the summer yes, but it's Florida. Also, Bugs are everywhere. Especially the mosiquitos. Yuck.

There is camping close by and other things to do. You just have to leave your home to find and do those things, they don't come to you. ; ) lol

Good luck

What? Because some folks might want more than Ocala has to offer in the way of culture and entertainment?

Macy's looks like Kmart, Dillards doesnt have furniture, and we cant even get a Homegoods here.

People seem to forget that Florida was originally meant for the retirees.

Ummmmm, no it wasnt.........Henry Flagler built the railroads for wealthy snowbirds to come and vacation at his hotels.

That I will agree with wholeheartedly!

we also come from the caribbean, and found many latinos in Ocala. I am sure there are also
many red necks, so you must be very careful where you purchase, and where you child goes
to school.

My mother was originally from the Citra ,Florida area . She grew up here in the 1950's. When my father died in 1995, he left my mum well off, and she, being a die hard loyal Floridian, moved back to Citra. I lived in Dallas ,Texas.I worked for Corporate America for most of my life. Got plaques on my wall for all those years of "faithful service". Corporate downsizing, laid off and had difficulty finding a job that paid what I had been making.Lost my house ,car, everything. My mum had an extra house, so we moved down here to get back on my feet. JEEZ! This place is like Green Acres! I'm surprised I don't have to climb a telephone pole to call someone! Don't move here! My wife says this is a place people move to and can never leave. BS! I am taking classes at CFCC and moving us back to Texas! However, think about your children. The schools here are pathetic! Sparr elementary school was actually PROUD of being a "B" school ! To my way of thinking, second place is first place loser! The dean told me half the parents wouldn't know if their kids came home that night! Trailer trash everywhere. More tatoos than teeth. A place where the Mullet hair style NEVER went out of style. The middle school is rated as a "D" quality school.Around here there seems to be no middle class. You have wealthy and you have peasants. Racists? You betcha! White ones and black ones! It truly has been an eye opening experience. When we leave,we will shake the dirt from our shoes and never look back. JA

Ocala has good and bad just like everywhere else, personnally I dont care for it but I'm a city girl. But my house is for sale and maybe someone somewhere will buy it, before I have the need for a walker and
orthopedic shoes!

Howdy, Jack...I understand your frustration. I am a proud Texan...Dallas...Lake Highlands. I used to live here ( St. Pete ) back in the mid 60's/ early 70's. Even then Florida schools were god-awful. Thank goodness my kids grew up in LH/RISD. I don't know how young families support and educate their families here. We are in Ocala now, due to the usual "parents need help" scenario. I had been splitting my time between Dallas and here as DH was still working and I love my LH home. When DH was laid off ( the old Tech crash scenario ) I convinced him to try it out here. It has been quite an adjustment, for all the same reasons you cited, but after a couple of years of getting used to the mindset here, I am just about ready to sell and stay here permanently. Of course, we are YOUNG federal retirees, (under 50) and the kids are grown, so we can afford to ignore the school and job situation. Other things really bother me such as lack of property rights, the old boy politics, cable and utility games, the shyster developers, and how some of these people drive, but after being here, you learn what questions to ask and what to avoid. I do love not fighting LBJ, Central Expy, winter ice, clean air, the central location, the weather, and the close beaches. It does take a while to remember that they just ain't Texan, but a nobless oblige attitude will set in and you may be able to enjoy to just sit back and enjoy the show.....in the middle of November.....in your shorts and T-shirts....enjoying homemade chili with no beans and beef from Publix....Share the wealth and introduce your neighbors to Frito Pie. Oh yeah....and just where do you have your Lone Star flag planted here-?
