So what happens in Ocala during Hurricane season? (Tampa, Deltona: house, safest area)

I heard something scary today that made me think: What if Miami gets hit by a bad hurricane and it does damage like Katrina? A good majority of the people would move to Central Florida. Can you imagine the impact it would have on this area? It can barely handle the people here now much less a few hundred thousand more. I am not a "chicken little" but it really did cause me to think ahead.

Floridamom had the right idea, get a house with a basement hard to find in Florida, but they are the only solution to tornadoes. We did have a Hurricane pass right thru Inverness two years ago, no problem had homeowners at the time and all the tree that fell were away from houses and other structures on property, this year with no insurance, I have cut all trees that were aimed at my house. Central Florida does get severe storms check google Lake Mary area south of Ocala last year.

Not to mention the tornadoes in The Villages early this year. A lot of people were killed then.

Yep. I figured on that - it's already starting to happen in drips and drabs. Got me some acreage up in the very north of Georgia with a nice little cabin on it. And if what you describe ever does happen - I'll sell out, take my money and run to the deep south to join all of the other old-time Floridians who've left. We ain't all that liked up there, but I've heard that some of the old Florida crackers have figured out how to fit in good enough.

Oh, how dare I forget... we did get some Hail!

Do not worry jenrein, where you will be is a good 20 miles east of Dunnellon and about 20 miles or so from The Villages/Lady Lake.

The tornado activity ran up through Leesburgh, Lady Lake, a corner of the The Villages over through Paisley (many deaths there) into the Deltona area... I was awake and all we got was some rain, it did not even make my Sat TV go out (good thing, I was watching the weather cast!). Now, that is NOT to say we do not get some harsh weather, but the worst I have been in was heavy rain here. Nothing like any of the good Blizzards we would get up north!

Oh, you're all wrong on that!!! I once saw on TV where this big old cyclone picked up a house, with a little girl and dog inside of it, and whirled it around in the sky for nearly 10 minutes! The girl was knocked out, but when she woke up the house landed in a place far far away.

I definitely agree with that. I'm also not familiar with canes, but since they spawn tornadoes, you aren't safe in a sturdy house. Just watch the news sometime after a twister hits the midwest. It flattens everything.

And Floridamom, I hope you find a place that's more affordable. It seems that many people (myself included) just don't have the $$ for those half million dollar homes.

If a cat 4 or 5 cane moved onshore around Taylor or Levy county and moved ENE you can bet Ocala would get ripped up pretty good! It's been since 1921 since the Tampa area got a direct hit, or anywhere on the northwest coast of FL has had a cat 3 or stronger storm come onshore.
