Ah. I think it's pretty out there, but I don't think it's some of the best scenery in the country. The Fall colors are probably among the best, yeah, but Ohio's hills aren't quite mountainous enough for me. Maybe this is one of those situations where it all depends on your personal tastes, but I find far better scenery in many other places of the nation. Personally, I think Kentucky has much better scenery, and so does Tennessee. I'm more inclined to enjoy the kind of scenery found in California and other places such as New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, etc.

I hear you about KY and Tennessee and really WV too. May be prettier than Athens, more hilly but otherwise similar. I like the landscapes of the west, like the places you mention, but it is just a little too dry for me (excepting Pac NW, where I have never been). EG New Mexico is great but for me an outdoor scene is incomplete without a Maple or Elm or other large-leaf deciduous tree (no i don't count aspen). I probably like the western landscapes as much overall, but probably not more, so that is why appalachia is "some of the best" scenery in the country and not necessarily "THE best"
