Honestly, if you are looking for an open minded, diverse, artsy area in Ohio, you're choices are quite limited. I am trying to get out of Ohio because of the lack of these qualities. I live about 15 miles south of Dayton, and I would stongly advise against the Dayton area. Columbus is in my opinion, the most liberal, diverse area in Ohio and its not a bad city actually. Many parts of Ohio are white only. The cities are black and white, and other than Columbus very few other nationalities. You wont see the diversity here. Do you realize that 8-9 months out of the year the sky is grey and overcast and you may go for weeks without seeing the sun in the winter. In addition there are not a lot of outdoor activities here. People are into sports and drinking.
Granted the real estate is much more affordable, I would urge you to consider the sacrifices you may make in moving here. There is not much culture at all here (except Columbus). The small towns are conservative and even though Columbus is the most liberal area, it is still conservative compared to California. The economy is bad and there just isnt alot to do here. Have you considered New Mexico, Dallas or Austin, Utah, Colorado, AZ or any other state? I wish you well and peace be with you.

Hmmm...

I think a lot of the people who think Ohio is so bad either have lived here forever and are sick of it, or came here expecting it to be something it wasn't and were so disappointed that can't get over it.

Is OHIO (any part of it) the same as LA?? Of course not!! Its not NY city either!! But you seem smart enough to realize that.

It is the midwest. That means some liberals (yep, some of us here do believe in gay marriage, a woman's right to choose, and that the current war is stupid) some conservatives (some of us home school, think women belong behind their man, think "gay" in any form is a horrible sin, and that a woman who gets rid of an unborn child is damned, and that current war isn't enough!), some rich, some poor...

but in general more in the "middle". its not bible belt like the deep South, but its not going to be San Fransico either. I just moved (am in the process of relocating) from the Detroit 'burbs to Cincinnati. Its a little conservative (for my tastes) and definitely the city thinks its SOUTHERN... but there is stuff to do, the people are friendly, the economy down here seems pretty good (compared to Detroit/Toledo corridor) and real estate is comparatively cheap.

Good luck, keep your head on your shoulders.. If you get time, come out and visit for a while.

There are museums, symphonies, clubs, restaurants, zoos, river boats, and examples of culture (German, Hispanic, Appalaichian) all over... you just have to not be "bored to death" and willing to look..

good luck!
