Moving to Ohio
My husband and I are moving to Ohio, we would like a rural setting but we need to stay near youngstown. We heard Salem was a nice place. Was wondering about the highschool there. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Salem schools are in a bit of financial trouble. They just announced a cut of nine teaching positions, and a few more janitorial positions. It's also not really rural in the Salem district. I have a Salem address. I don't live in Salem, and my kids don't go to their schools anymore. We are in the rural school district of South Range. All of the rural schools around here are good. Some are just a bit better than others. Your top choices are Western Reserve, South Range, Springfield local, Columbiana, Crestview local, and then West Branch. North Jackson is also a good rural area, but their schools are in severe financial distress. I've heard that their district is going to be absorbed by Western Reserve, and Lordstown schools. Both of which are closer to Youngstown than Salem is. Show this list to your real estate agent and they should be able to help you out. All real estate in this area should be searched by school district, not towns or addresses. They are too misleading.
I would say that the average price in my district is in the 200k-300k range. That will get you a good sized house on 5-10 acres. The other districts will be slightly less.

If you are thinking of moving to a rural area near y-town i would check out Trumbull Co. as well. Off the top of my head i can think of several towns that might fit your criteria: Lordstown, Newton Falls, Fowler, Vienna, Mecca, Bazetta, Champion, Bristol, and West Farmington. Champion and Bazetta (Lakeview) schools are great and both districts are very close to Corps Lakes Gateway: Ohio - Mosquito Creek Lake. Also, most of these areas are less than 30 minutes away from most of the Youngstown area. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask me or SouthRange.........hopefully, we have the answers! Good luck on your search!!!

I think Columbiana is a nice little town. The countryside around it is pretty and it is not way out in the middle of no where. It is close to shopping in Boardman and cultural events in Youngstown. The schools are good there too. Good luck!

Columbiana is a great little place. They have good schools and good kids. Property taxes in Columbiana County are a little cheaper than Mahoning County, but the town of Columbiana itself has a 1% wage tax that us rural dwellers don't pay. I think you'll be happy there.

Hi there! I'm the secretary for the Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce (and a Columbiana resident practically all my life!) - It's a wonderful, friendly, beautiful, growing place. I'd be happy to send you info if you'd like some "paper info" on our area. The Chamber's phone # is 330.482.3822
