Akron is not a depressed area as far as jobs go. They have a great technology sector. Akron is a very nice city. I think Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Akron and Dayton are great places with some really nice suburbs.

BTW, Ohioan was banned from this site because he keep getting information that no one wanted to read. It got boring after the second week of posting information that no one thought was informative for a day everyday for that two weeks. It got old real fast. Just to clear all that up for anyone who was wondering.

Default Well, actually, Paintballer,

I read "Ohioan's" posts, and unless I'm confusing him/her with another poster, most of the posts had something to do with air quality and things pertaining to that.

On the other hand, when I read certain other posts, you would think that they're written by the various Ohio Chambers of Commerce.

It's too bad that anyone that has any opinion that does not agree with the glowing reports of Ohio is "banned". So much for free speech and opinion.

Maybe the moderators of this board should let ALL opinions stand, and not just the ones that are the most "bullish" in their opinion. When people are looking to come to an area, it would be good to have all views, not just the glowing report version. I do like Pollyanna views though; it's quite humorous when one names cities as being "desireable" that are actually crime-ridden and down and out. Maybe those that don't live in Ohio or in this area don't know that, but those that have lived in this area and know the city very well are probably chuckling at the vast generalizations that are stated as gospel. Oh, well, everyone is entitled to their opinion...mostly.

Ohioan was not banned for his opinions but for involving in personal attacks and flame wars. His old posts (except for the ones targeted against other users) can still be read on this board.

The right to free speech is respected here but not to the extent of insulting others.

Happy posting.

In Ohio, you'll get a large (2800 - 4500 square feet depending on area) home for $400,000. If I'm not mistaken, Kroger HQ is downtown. Anywhere in the NE or E Suburbs are good places to look. Mason, Lebanon are more middle income areas, Indian Hill is a VERY high income area but they're all geographically close and within 30 minutes of Downtown. It depends on how important good schools are. If school quality isn't important, Northern Kentucky is cheaper to live in, there are some nice older homes in Fort Mitchell, but the schools are average at best.

From a Southern California perspective, the weather will take some getting used to. Summers are no hotter than Cali, but MUCH more humid and steamy. Fall and spring are beautiful, winter can be cloudy, and it does snow in Cincy but not that much. Winter temps are usually in the 30s but can be as mild as 60 or as cold as -10. Summers are usually in the 80s but can occasionally get to 95 or 100.

Maybe just look for other smaller Ohio cities where Kroger has a presence.

One might be Saint Clairsville, in the eastern part of the state. Do you really want to be part of another big city that is in an urban sprawl situation??? People are pretty laid back in the eastern part of the state. They can have the best of all Worlds.

St. Clairsville is ideally located, it is just off I-70, the major east / west freeway. You have easy access to three major cities (Columbus, Pittsburgh, Cleveland) but still can live in a "Right Sized" town. Plus you have access to some real boonies to the south that would be totally impossible in most of California. Monroe county directly to the south has like less than 15,000 people rattling around in ~500 square miles and there are a number of other very rural counties after that, plus lots of West Virginia to roam around in. Lots of things to do and see. I'm not that bored living in this area after 30 odd years in a major metro area. Sure don't miss the hassles.

Your money from the sale of the house in CA would buy a lot of house in that area of Ohio with probably a bunch left over. St. Clairsville is a nice smaller town, clean, easy to like. I go up to that area every few weeks or so. Big shopping mall complex that has Kroger stores right off the freeway outside of town. Might be some distribution facilities located somewhere in the area.

That particular area is in a junction for the major freeway system in eastern Ohio. You get the mix of good quality of life features without most of the hassles. Good road system but the traffic is nothing like California. Rush hour is very tame by comparison. Wheeling W.VA is just down the road. You can commute rather long distances really easy for whatever purpose. School, work, recreation, etc.

The weather is tame compared to many other areas. A good four season area, winters are about 3 months but not severe. Get a nice spring season, summers are not very hot, you don't get the humidity or pollution of the central part of the state, very good air quality during about all the year. That area is not generally in a flood plain, fog belt, nor does it get many tornadoes or major hail storms which are the natural disasters to watch out for in Ohio. Ohio does not get hurricanes, earthquakes, large scale fires or most things that will totally wreck your life. The weather can be nice well up into December, can have a white Xmas, usually pretty well done by March. Don't really get anything bitter cold. 20F is about the worse on most days, don't get those long cold spells of many other places. Snows typically melt after a few days, don't have it on the ground forever.

I plan on starting to go to Florida for the peak of winter for a couple months or so, makes Ohio an ideal place if you can avoid the peak winter months. My relatives in Florida love to come up to Ohio in summer to get out of that oven down there.

The region is just north of the more hilly area of SE Ohio. Land is more rolling type countryside. You can avoid many of the problems of even the better places in Ohio. Like congestion, taxes, regulations, hassles of most types. The area is developed enough to have a lot of the good features without the snarl from too many people. Few real negatives as an overall view. General cost of living is quite a bit less than the major cities in Ohio.

I lived in Idaho a number of years back and witnessed the refugees fleeing from California that just wanted to sit on a rock and watch ground squirrels without a zillion other people around them. I think that part of Ohio today is an even better choice. It is not going to go bust and become just another urban snarl any time soon. My younger brother is looking to retire and move to Nirvana. He was talking about going to WY. Yo, Bro those winters are worse than in Illinois. He finally is coming back to Ohio to have another look. Paradise is all relative, a bit how you define it all.

I bought a small house in Ohio over the Internet just to have somewhere to move too, a year or so ago. Never even saw it in person. Just sent them the check which was a bit like petty cash. Since have fixed it up. Will be a "Free House", paid for by the interest off the sale of my high priced urban shack in a few months. I may eventually move up to something a bit more classy but it will probably be in the general area I am now. Like I tell everybody that wants me to move here or there. Find me somewhere better and I will go, so far, nobody has been able to define that somewhere in any type of concrete terms. Usually it involves some large negatives to pick up and move there.

I could live in the St. Clairsville area if it came to that quite comfortable. It might be an option down the pike as I get older.

Cincinnati is such a great metro to live in. And with all the new development going on downtown i wouldnt mind moving there either. There are some really nice condo units going in along the Columbia Parkway.
