I wasn't saying that to "scare" people away from Youngstown.

In fact if you read the sentence before that, I said: "As far as random shootings, I don't think there are many of these in Youngstown."

Then I said that it does happen, specifically because there were a few articles in the Vindicator about people getting hit by random bullets. One was on Albert Street and the other happened when people were leaving a club on Market in the Uptown. Both of these happened after 2:00am. So my advice was to be smart. Don't walk around Albert or Market in the middle of the night... My point was that the posted shouldn't have a problem near 5th Ave.

Also, 40 murders a year in a city of 75,000 can't be brushed off with a statement like: "Unless you are planning to get into the drug trade, you really don't have anything to worry about."

Youngstown's drug problem affects EVERYONE in the city. Even if your house has never been broken into, when's the last time you had it appraised?

I'm not bashing Youngstown. I'd love to see the city turn around and I really do see progress there. But I think people that are considering a move to the city need to be aware of the issues we have. Defend Youngstown, yes, of course, but don't put on rose-colored glasses. Like you said, "there is a tremendous amount of work to do."

Default Mill Creek Park area

I grew up near Mahoning Ave and Schenely Ave and went to school at Saint Brendan and Chaney.

Anyone from that area will tell you that Mill Creek is one of the best parks they've ever know. It is just a great place. We used to skate on lake Glacier in the winter. Awesome.

As far as the local community goes. I admit it is a bit run down. A few of my old, old friends still live in the area and say it isn't bad. Of course, I've been around the old stomping grounds just last week, and can say it isn't the picture perfect community it was during it's glory days in the 60s.

I still call that area... Home.

I just got back from this past weekend in Youngstown, looking primarily for real estate in the Fifth Ave. district. I have to say, I loved it! Yes, a couple of blocks in either direction and you can get into trouble, but I have to tell you, after paying $8000 in taxes, $5000 for homeowners insurance and $350,000 median prices for houses (which are small and need lots of work) I am ready to move up there and enjoy a great cost of living and see the seasons again! Ft. Lauderdale will be the next ghost town!

I'm glad you liked what you saw! I think more people like you will be moving to Youngstown, and places like it. The area does have great homes w/character and a low cost of living. Hopefully, if the trend continues, the Youngstown renaissance will happen faster than we can hope.

Don't get me wrong, youngstown does have it's problems, but i think things are starting to slowly turn the corner. We've realized that no one can save us but ourselves. The more good people that move here, the better off we all will be!

BTW, are you originally from the area? If not why did you pick youngstown? Just curious. Good luck finding a home.

Default Still a great place to raise your family

After re-reading my post, I think, I might have given the wrong impression.

I was trying to say that Youngstown is a little older than when I grew up there, but still the same great place. Most who grow up there and move away, end up moving back sooner or later.

After traveling all around the US I would move back to Ytown in a heartbeat. In fact, I tried to relocate back to the Hazelwood/Mahoning Ave. area. I wanted to send my little boy to St Brendan, where I went to school, to experience growing up in a great, small town. But, St Brendan school has been closed by the Diocese. (which broke my heart) The closest I could manage to get a job with the Federal government, for whom I have worked for 18 years, was Pittsburgh. But that is okay. I'm only 90 minutes away and have been visiting my friends there frequently.

Bottom line is. Do it. Move to Youngstown. You will never regret it. Drop me a line if you want to.

Stay Golden...

I suggest Hubbard. Near enough, low crime. There also have put money into fixing up the streets and businesses. New schools are being built that will also make it more desirable for families to move to and increase the value of houses some. Great people too.

Default From a local 44504'er

What makes a neighborhood is neighbors, not the hood.

I become agitated by the current culture to evaluate a place to live by its resale value. This is apropos to the current Mortgage loan debacle proving the need for a shift in that paradigm.
Also whether or not it has an already established community concerned homeowners who have done the work already.
This concerned homeowner is you.

Equity should be placed in the Owning of a house and its Responsibility to the community in which is stands. It doesn’t end at the end of the driveway. Not all investments you make in your future can be tracked on an index.

A sample checklist of goals to potential buyers from happy new home owners:

1. My wife and I are going back to school for a second time and with the price of gas these days need to be close with the commute. (expensive.)
2. We plan on buying a house that could grow for family plenty of park space and affordable but, with CHARACTER! (expensive.)
3. We love urban city nightlife and the comfort of a small town (being from PA but living in Chicago.) (expensive.)
4. More Importantly, We also want to make a difference in our world no mater how small. Establish ourselves, while Re-establishing the fabric of a community.(priceless.)
Impossible you say? I don’t have to tell anyone who just moved to 44504 that all this currently exists here (Or, for that matter, any area that is undervalued by their resale potential or crime index.)
So, I have recently moved back to Youngstown because it was a smart thing to do.

Tips to achieve these goals:
1. As for the neighborhood? NEVER ask someone that is getting a commission on the sale of a house to determine the quality of a neighborhood (you know who you are.)
2. Nothing sells news like bad news. Try not to generalize a whole town by what makes the headlines. More damage is done by the fear of it, than it itself (just ask Churchill.)
3. If you’re in it for the money, then earn it. ADD value. You clean up your yard house or street; your neighbor is obliged to do also (From scientifically established “One-upping’ the Joneses’ Theory.)
4. Tiny fish in a big pond is not so small in a tiny pond. Think about it. You can make a difference.

For the record, there have been more panhandling, stolen cars, break-ins and robberies more times in an average suburban Mall Parking lot than I care to give numbers on. These places fill up fine.

To my constituents, I apologize for the current renovation projects. The new roof is on (hope you like) and we will be putting in the new energy efficient windows in a week or two (not to worry, very Dutch Colonial I assure you.) Any Issues, I’m sure someone will bring it up politely as I’m talking out the trash or stop to talk on our nightly walks around Crandall Park.

And as for random shootings, would we prefer "scheduled" shootings? I'll bring it up at the next block watch committee. All welcome.

Default youngstown's drug problem

man... what the **** is youngstown doing about the drug problem?! i.e. the problem of drug dealers all over the place? im sick of seeing all these drug houses never getting busted. everyday, on my way home from school i drive by at least 3 known drug houses inhabited by real deal drug dealers selling real deal drugs... im not talking pot. im talking dangerous community wrecking hard drugs. north side, east side, west side... all over the m'fn place. these houses arent hard to find.

why arent these houses and these people being dealt with?

are the cops scared to bust these houses or are they working with the cops or what? and if its a bigger problem than what our local police can deal with then why arent we bringing in outside help or something?

i want my community to be a better place and i see some improvements with the demolition of these abandon buildings on the main streets but things need to start moving into the residential streets with the drug problems.
