From today's paper (http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/dayton-news/horse-racing-track-owner-could-build-200-million-track-in-dayton-1076995.html - broken link), Penn National Gaming wants to relocate two of its tracks-- Beulah Park from Columbus to Dayton, and Raceway Park from Toledo to Youngstown.

There were also rumors of Lebanon Raceway moving to a "better" local location.

Yep! The Youngstown location (which will actually be in Austintown) is right up the road from my place of employment. The traffic at that intersection is already bad enough as it is, should be a real nightmare getting out of there if this track becomes a reality. It's more jobs for the area though so I'm all for it. I was wondering why they spent the better part of the past year cleaning the site up.

Better = so far away that they don't compete with the shiny new casinos for gambling business.

Good news for Youngstown, but bad news for Toledo. Raceway Park is in an area of the city that has become kind of seedy and run down. Lots of adult clubs and bookstores, a failed mall that sits like a big, abandoned ship, very little in the way of anything that would make people want to visit that part of town, and now Raceway Park, along with its 100+ jobs will be pulling out too. I have heard rumors in the past about Walmart wanting to build on the Raceway Park site but the racetrack wouldn't sell, maybe now Walmart will be able to move in and turn the area around a bit. I know, I know, Walmart...but at least it would be something, and there is no Walmart in that rather populated part of the city now.

Or ... Better = someone is willing to pay big money for the land that Lebanon Raceway sits on. If the post office weren't broke and hadn't moved out of its cramped downtown building recently, that would be one of my guesses.

And the corollary: Better = someone with a lot of clout and $$ doesn't want those horse barns in their current location.

We've been reading about this for awhile in the Youngstown Vindicator. The big "if" that remains, is whether or not they will be allowed to install video slots; no video slots, no moves.

Or ...

Lebanon Raceway could move to Moraine

I didn't even connect the Lebanon Raceway, anyway, with slots gambling. Silly me.

Ya, but Youngstown is only an hour from both Cleveland and Pittsburgh which already have or are going to have casinos. Let's also not forget Moutaineer resort and casino in WV, i don't think they're even an hour away.
