Cleveland lost 17% of its population to fall to 396,815 — its fewest inhabitants since 1900. The city peaked in 1950 at 914,808. More residents abandoned the city from 2000 to 2010 than in the 1990s. Nearby suburbs shrank, too, although some population growth occurred in distant suburbs.
"These trends are much bigger than government can do anything about, not that government shouldn't try," says Cleveland State University demographer Mark Salling.
The lack of immigrants hurts Ohio's cities. Unlike cities in other states, Ohio's cities are gaining few Hispanic residents, says Brookings Institution demographer William Frey.

why would anyone WANT to stay in Ohio or Michigan either?

I think this country is getting too expensive for most of us to afford to live in.

if you have a job Ohio is probably a good place since it is cheap compared to the "coast" (take your pick, east or west). Now there are those winter heaing bills.....

I moved to Ohio from Colorado and know many people who made similar moves. The "this place sucks" attitude I see primarily in people who have never left where they grew up or people who were somehow scarred by where they were from (social outcasts, super f-d up family, etc.) Ohio and Michigan are great places to live.

This.

Coming from the south, you guys just need to realize what you have and appreciate that. Appreciate the diversity, the educational opportunities, the low cost of living.

Texas is not cheap, nor is Alabama. Try and find a home in the city of Atlanta in a livable neighborhood. It'll be twice the cost of anything in Ohio or Michigan.

Unless you like suburbs and getting screwed over by $4.00 a gallon gas on your 40 minute commute, there are no less expensive places down south, the jobs don't pay as well, the winters are still cold (just muddy instead of snowy) and the people have the average intelligence of a rock.
