and you try to say "Cuyahoga Falls," and we will laugh. Is it in Maryland that a grocery cart or shopping cart is called a "carriage" or "buggy", which both of these are used for babies, not shopping. ha ha. and it isn't yep, it is "yup" . and we say we warsh our clothes, too! I can't believe that people are like this up there yonder in town. and I am thinking about returning. oops! Maybe I will see you in GA. they still say yes mam, thank you mam. but you wont' be able to understand them, if you can't understand the buckeye language. (hang in there)

In MD, we say "soda", and yes, a grocery cart is a "carriage"> A bag is a bag. Vacation is also a "holiday. It is "wooder" instead of "water." Shore instead of beach. I've heard the warsh or worsh thing out in MD too.
Looks like about 2-4 months and Im outta here for good. I will do some exploring, close on the house, decide where and when, then its see-ya.
Yes the Ohio and "tri-state" language is a real trip if your not used to it. But several in this god-forsaken town in OH speak like their IQ is in the single digits. I have caught on to the Buckeye language, just hope it doesnt become a habit....
I can give you an example of a conversation yesterday at a jobsite I was visiting: O= Me T = Them
T= Hey my doo! My doo!!
O= What?
T= Hey doo, wha up, um I nee me a nuthur pallet o drywall maing?
O= What?
T= drywall? anuthur pallet?
O= OHH, you need another pallet of drywall.
T= Yup, dass wha I nee maing.
O= You will have to speak with your foreman.
T= Oh, um yeah, ok, tanks doo.
This isn't the exact conversation, but it is a shortened summary. This is somewhat extreme over the normal "buckeye talk". I don't know what to call it, other than ghetto, but I got a good laugh when I left for the next site. It wasn't like he was from another country, but he's not the first one I have heard here talking like this.

I do remember ordering a pizza in the Dayton area and being asked if I wanted Mangoes on it. I thought that was really strange until I discovered that they were really referring to a bell pepper. I haven't heard that anywhere else.
It is also the only place that I have seen where the pizza is cut into little squares.
Good luck with your move! If you are open to suggestions, you may want to check out the Huntsville area.

Onewayout, glad to hear that things are shaping up, your house is sold, and you are exploring other avenues as far as relocating. I wanted to say that I've lived in Ohio for about 35 years; came to the U.S. at 6 years of age - having been born in Eastern Europe. Frankly, I do NOT speak "Buckeye" language, and I definitely pronounce "O-hi-o", and not the other pronunciation. I don't understand the "warsh", considering that there's no "r" in the word. My MIL and SIL's pronounce it that way too. Interestingly enough, my first name has an "r" in it, and my MIL pronounces it with no "r". Interesting, but then just when you think you've seen a lot, there is always there to surprise you with even more.
Best wishes with everything.

Donna7,
Yes I am. I acutally live in La Mesa, just outside of San Diego, but I am planning to move to Ohio when I retire in a few years. The cost of living here is beyond ridiculous!

^I always hear the horror stories of life in California. We have a lot of California migrants living here in SW Ohio. From Columbus, Dayton down here to Cincy. Its really in bad shape over there. How about them wildfires? That one going right now has burned the size of the city of Chicago.

paintballer1708,
We are in the middle of fire season here. The current fire up in Ventura is a bad one but we actually set a record for the largest fire right here in San Diego's east county a few years ago. That was very bad and I wouldn't want to live through that again. I'm looking forward to regular seasons like autumn and winter in Ohio. We have three seasons here: green (sorta like spring but only if it rains that year), brown (90% of the year) and fire.

^I really do like the change of seasons. Before i got my job in Cleveland my wife and I were considering a move back to her homestate of Florida. But we both love Ohio and i got my job so we didnt want to leave. The change of seasons is nice. Right now most of the trees are green, but the dogwood tree on the back corner of my deck is turning this orange color and the oak in my backyard is turning a reddish color. Winter can be nice when there is this light snowfall and you walk outside and everything is really quiet and in the morning the snowfall sits on the tree branches. Spring everything is coming back, and summer is always nice.

1. People. You get rude jerks everywhere you go. A lot depends on the neighborhood. I've been all over the country and there are friendly areas and not-so-friendly ones. It's not a state thing so much as a town or neighborhood thing.
I do hate the word "pop" and force myself to say soda. My girlfriend is from New England and hates if I let "pop" slip out.
2.The weather. You give and take. Southern Ohio, near Cincy has weather much more similar to what you had in Maryland. I have a friend from Fargo, ND who laughs when we ***** about winter weather.
3. Economy. Ohio needs a new governor (Blackwell) to lower taxes and make the state more business-friendly.
4. That's everywhere.

I like everything you say...except one.
Blackwell's the man. He's NOT associated with the current corrupt administration. In fact, Strickland is more like Taft than Blackwell is.

Speaking of Ohio weather, is it storming in Mason yet? The flood gates have opened in Kettering and I don't relish the idea of driving all the way home in a storm.
