Moving to Springboro from the UK
Hi,
My family and I are relocating to Springboro from the UK on an L-1 visa for 3 years - I arrive on 9th Sept with my wife and kids following in October.
Don't really know anyone or too much about the area - can anyone give me any info which will help us settle easily? Especially the first 5 weeks while I'm on my own!!
Cheers
Paul

Well, you will need a car or maybe two (one for you, the other for your wife). There is no public transport in Springboro.
Ohio has a statewide school rating system, and the Springboro school district has been rated excellent. If you are religous there are plenty of churches in the area. If your kids are into atheltics the Dayton area, to the north, has a very strong youth soccer culture, with a lot of teams and tournaments, but I am not sure if Springboro is part of this scene.
This is a very fast growing suburban community that has grown up around a rural village. The traffic is bad on Ohio Route 73, between "old" Springboro and Interstate I-75 (the motorway). This stretch of highway has been pretty well developed with shopping centers, fast food places, etc, so it looks like typical North American suburbia. This is were you will do most of your shopping for basics.
As for living, there are no "bad areas" in Springboro. I would not move to next door Franklin, though, as it is a bit rough, older working class community.
The area to the north, on Ohio Route 721 (also known as Springboro Pike), is starting to develop into another suburban commercial area. If you are looking for better quality food, baked goods, meats, and beer and wine, Dorothy Lane Market up there has very good quality food and specialty items.
Further north on OH 721 is the Dayton Mall, which is where the department stores and clothing stores are at. There is a lot around that mall area, including movie theatres, restaurants, etc.
That is about it. Not sure what else to say.
Here is what the counryside looks like:

Welcome to the Colonies, Dodgykeeper Family! Well, JefferyT pretty much summed up Springboro in a nutshell. Sorry, there are no roundabouts; you'll just have to adapt to driving insanely on the wrong side of the road just like WE do here!
Yes, Dorothy Lane Market, as well as Jungle Jim's (N of Cincinnati in Fairfield) will supply you and the family with some of what you'll miss from home, food-wise. (Both have websites if you care to Google 'em!) And, as JeffreyT says, public transport in Springboro (as well as most of the U.S.) is poor to non-existent.
You'll be roughly halfway between Cincinnati and Dayton and both cities offer plenty of possibilities for dining/shopping/entertainment.
You'll find that you'll get a lot more house (especially in square footage) for your money here. Utilities are relatively cheap (especially petrol ) in comparison to England.
Again, welcome to Springboro! Hope this little bit of info will give you a start. Please don't hesitate to come back with more questions or concerns. We'll do our best to help!

Thanks for the info. I've visited Springboro a couple of times so I have been to the Dayton Mall and DLM and they seem great.
I'm hoping to go and see the Reds during the first week I'm over so I'll go and see Jungle Jim's then as it looks different to anything I've seen before!
I'm really looking forward to getting over - everyone seemed really friendly when I was over in July and hopefully we can settle into the area quickly.
Thanks again
Paul

If you're looking for uniquely 'fun' things to do as you get acquainted with the area, here are some additional tips:
- The Dayton Art Institute is actually a wonderful museum for an area of our size.
- Visit the Newport, Kentucky area along the Ohio River when you go to the Reds game!
- When your wife and children come, take them to Kings Island amusement park in Mason and Newport Aquarium on the Kentucky side of Cincinnati.
- If you enjoy the outdoors, visit Cox Arboretum.
- If you really enjoy the outdoors and like hiking, visit Yellow Springs. Have lunch at Ye Olde Trail Tavern, shop around a little, and then hike at Glen Helen Preserve and/or John Bryan State Park. As a treat afterwards, take the kids to Young's Dairy Farm, where they can pet animals and enjoy wonderful ice cream treats.
- For a more trendy night out, see an independent film at the Neon Theater in the Oregon District and have dinner at Thai 9.
- Since your family is coming in October, take advantage of our gorgeous autumn foliage. Go hiking, stop at Hidden Valley Fruit Farm on SR 48 for apples and hay rides, etc. Then go home and bake an apple pie together! Brush up on your Halloween knowledge, carve a pumpkin, and think about the children's costumes for trick-or-treat.
- If you like antiques, spend time in nearby Lebanon and have a meal at the Golden Lamb.
- To see the north side of Dayton, visit Tipp City and spend an afternoon shopping in the little stores. Have dinner at Coldwater Cafe (French provincial style).
And, on behalf of the rest of the Miami Valley, welcome!

Don,t listen to jefferyt,he is full of himself like most springboro
residents,I,ve lived in franklin my whole life,it is a hard working
family oriented community, that values its kids.not like springboro
a community of lawyers doctors high income self absorbed
individuals that come and go in that city more than johns in a
brothel,it is a cold indifferent city of people that look down on
others that don,t have as many material posessions or aren,t as
rich, most people don,t stay in springboro long, its just a stop over
in their many stops because of relocation for their job or as they
increase their income they move on to an even more affluent
community. If you want to live in a close knit family oriented
town,we would be glad to have you in franklin.
move to a real community in franklin, you,ll see the
difference.

So true of what you said. Although jeff has some points about some rough spots in Franklin. But hey Springboro has them too. If you look in the right spots. SOME not ALL do tend to think they are better than the next. They live in their overpriced home and think they are on top of the world. I used to take my kids to the YMCA up that way when I lived in Miamisburg. Most of the folk will barely speak to you. I suppose the skin I wear had tad bit to do with it. Every now and then you'd meet a real person who wasnt so caught up into the mentality there that would be friendly and have good conversation with you. You know what ? I see the "im better than you attitude" throughout this part of ohio. Centerville think they are better than Springboro. Huber Heights think they are better than Fairborn. Oakwood is more elite than kettering. The majority in most of these place all carry a snobby attitude. it just goes with the territory I guess. As an individual we must not get caught up in the fakeness that exists. They may drive the big fancy cars and live in the 400k+ home ,but folk are struggling. Most can not afford the life style they lead.
