Default Stars And Christmas Trees

We are in the process of moving to Marysville from Michigan. During our travels south down 68 from Findlay and 31 south from Kenton we noticed many large brown stars on garages and houses. Coming back to Michigan at night we noticed many small Christmas trees with white lights on porches.
I am assuming this is a religious thing but not sure why I do not see these symbols in Michigan or other areas. Maybe I am missing something but I am not familiar with this practice.....?????
Thanks

Decorations, I have the lighted trees in my house, some people are using the grape vine wrapped in the shape of a tree on their porches and place lights on them, decorate them for all holidays. The stars are the same, they come in many sizes and are decortated in many styles. Used on homes, barns, fences etc.

Those are "barn stars" typically on homes that have a barn. Becoming all the rage, recently!

I've been told by a neighbor that just put up a star on his house that he noticed them on some barns in the Amish area and liked it.
