Californian Seeking Advice Re: Suburbs of Dayton

Wrightflyer, I wholeheartedly agree with your comments about fan beahavior at sporting events. But I believe that PARENTS should be teaching their kids about manners and sportsmanship; teachers can't do EVERYTHING for their students. BTW; I've seen more than a little beahavior by parents...

I agree with you also. Sad thing is this, todays children in public schools are not like the ones that grew up in the 40,50, 60s etc..

Whats is going on in those indoctrination centers is down right shocking. There is a different mentality today than it was yesteryear.

I recall back when I played. The Athletic Director(who was present) would have skinned us alive had we been rude to the visiting team or cheerleaders.

I think for the most part, that is the case with the Centerville Student Section . . .they have the Bourgeois..we're better and richer than you attitude with most everyone. However, as someone who works with a Centerville program, it is definitely not the case with all their students. Maybe it's that way at sporting events, but in the other groups throughout CHS there is a real class about kids representing Centerville, especially in the performing arts/music groups. They have nationally ranked marching band and orchestra programs. It's not uncommon to see Centerville (one of the best bands in the nation 13th) donate instruments and help programs that are struggling and not have the finances to buy new instruments. They are currently raising money for another high school in Los Angeles whose music program was cut b/c they didn't have the money to fund it. They represent the best in Centerville. . .and if you get a chance to see the documentary "From the 50 Yardline" I highly recommend you do. I think it's coming back to Dayton in late January 08/early Feb

Anyway. . .back to Centerville's fan section, and it may be a little consolation, but HH Wayne made them eat SERIOUS crow when they sunk a 3 at the end of the game to knock off then undefeated Centerville at Centerville. . .yes being taunted the entire way by the centerville students.

Yeah, it's just irksome to see teenagers act in such a fashion. But when you see some of the stuff they look up to, its no wonder (i.e. TV personalities).

I've had the pleasure of being in marching band before and I've had by far very few experiences in the negative. Be it Centerville, Grove City, or any other well-faring organization, it sure is refreshing to know they are out there making a difference. But I digress. Centerville is still one of the better suburbs of Dayton to raise kids but not the only one.

Coming from California ourselves a few years ago, your a heck of a lot safer in East Dayton, then you are in Cal City or Downtown LA after 11, the crime yeah well, you get that anywhere. Originally from Charlotte, NC I can say that I laugh when people get as worried and "Scared about Dayton as they do." There are pockets of good everywhere, if you've been around San Diego you know it's got it's pockets just like LA and Palmdale is of course Valley but not bad. Well Dayton is the same thing but we choose the Downtown area because what we paid for our home $95k would of cost us a million or more in Cali. It's alot of older homes and we aren't Oakwood just a few blocks shy but you don't have to send your kid to Dayton Public, You have Charter Schools, Private Schools (our 3 kids attend) and Etc. the only people who truly believe Downtown Dayton is scarey haven't been to many places and haven't actually driven through our "pocket". Many people here like us hold a Masters or at least a Bachelor's in something. We aren't all perfect but if you are smart and look for the good pockets and just visit you'll find the true jewels of the city. It is alot different from stucco though, the oldness of homes are like those of victorian and depression era homes that were made for quality not quantity. Many have the originality they were built with decades ago which is rare. Also do your research, people don't like to admit it and realtors aren't allowed to say it but, luckily I don't care and love to share and I'm not a realtor. Section 8 isn't over populating down town Dayton it's being relocated and drive by where it used to be if you don't believe it and you'll see it's boarded up and nice new for sale signs exist infront of brand new homes just built as part of the effort to clean up downtown Dayton. While it's common knowledge that the housing market stinks as we all know it's not like that forever and the truth is that Dayton is alot like old Atlanta or Charlotte for that matter and the section 8 residents if you take the time like we did to research are being relocated to the suburb areas just like they are in other small cities. You have to start somewhere but just make sure you do your research and if nothing else rent first buy later like we did to see where you want to be and get more familiar. Good School districts are only part of the equation and our private school and our neighbors charter school (Pathway) all score just as high if not higher then the suburb schools. Just look at it from all points of view, there are people who don't want change and those that do and no matter where you go you will see a crime index no where is perfect but you make it what it is. Just bring a Jacket because our last two winters here have been cold cold cold compared to LA weather, oh and another perk we don't have swamp coolers here, you get real a/c untis! I was a member of the Centerville Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and Orchestra in the 80's, and we were admonished repeatedly about good sportsmanship. I'm so glad to read that the music programs have maintained their strong commitment to citizenship, and I'm sorry to note that the the sports program isn't following their lead. BTW, I loved "From the 50-Yard Line." It brought back GREAT memories!

For the OP...I understand that schools are important to you, but what else is on your wish list? What kind of setting do you prefer? How long a commute is acceptable? What is your budget? Without more information, it's a little difficult to make good suggestions Out of curiosity, where in California do you live now?
