Conneaut, OH
What does anyone know about this community? We are currently PA residents, looking to buy something in OH for retirement. Like being near Lake Erie, wondering if this might be good investment for 10 years down the road.

I love Conneaut. It was a great midsized town right on the lake. I believe it is right in Lake County. HAS, knows a lot about Lake County and all the great little towns in the area. They all seem very nice. My trips to Conneaut were great. Have nothing but good things to say about the town. The people were very friendly, very clean town with very nice houses and right on the lake. It has great views, nice sunsets. And the beaches were great. It seems that every single beach i have been to in Lake County has been some of the cleanest i have ever been to. Cleaner than some in Florida. I am also a former resident of PA. Im glad that i got out of there when i did. The taxes are horrible. The economy wasnt too great either. Anyway, im sure if you do make the move Lake County or Conneaut will not disappoint you.
Here Conneaut's Home page.

I grew up in Springfield, PA. I live in Conneaut now.
Conneaut is in Ashtabula County right next to Pennsylvania. As noted, Conneaut is on Lake Erie, and the town takes rather good advantage of the lake front with a huge beach and look-out from the bluffs. There is a lot of history in this town our seaport was, for a time, the largest in the world, along with many other aspects in the history that are note-worthy. There are a couple of covered bridges in this town. Covered bridges are one of this county's biggest tourest promoters, I can't remember how many are in this county but a I can tell you there is a new one being built and it will be the longest covered bridge in America (second largest in the world). This town is almost directly between Erie and Cleveland with direct access to I-90 to get to either one in roughly an hour.
There are many other good points about this town I could tell you but this whole run-along about how nice this town is without telling you a few other things about it that you may not like. There are a few bars in this town with a nice draw for bikers, it seems like they are around all summer. They aren't violent but all the bikes get noisy. The road maintainence on side roads, winter road maintainence, and winter harshness are all to frown upon. You have to go out of town to find a good grocery store, sure we have two in town but the nice one went out of business and the others just aren't as good. There are a few other things I don't like about this town but it's nothing to much to live with.
As for looking to move here in ten years, check back in five to seven years or at least before you make your final decision. This town has a possible future but it has since it was founded, now it just seems to be stuck in what it is. It is a decent retirement town though, many people stay here in the summer and go south for the winter. One day I'd like to do the same. I'll answer any questions you have about Conneaut, just email me or post here again.

I've got a good friend that lives in Conneaut. He's should be enough to keep you away! Damned Jarhead!!!
Seriously, he always talks great about the town but also mentions some other problems associated with small towns.
Sounds like a beautiful place to live.

As with any of the communities in the Lake Erie industrial belt things are a bit depressed so all those cities have their problems which makes for some contraversy on local financial issues, taxes, Schools, etc. but these will go away when the economy improves. This may be a good time to obtain your spot to sit on , prices are down but probably can't go too much lower and have the prospect of increasing expotentially as the economy improves. Great people make up for a lot of the deficiencies
