Um, I think you might have better luck posting on the Ohio forum for input.

I grew up not far from Youngstown, in Western Pennsylvania, and moved away 20 years ago. I think the area is still depressed. Most of the mills/manufacturing closed up. There was also quite a bit of violent crime in Youngstown but I don't know if they've improved the situation. Do make sure you do your homework before you move there!

I definitely wouldn't move here without a job lined-up first.

Hmmm... I wholeheartedly agree with the above posts. The area is still depressed, most of the mills have closed, there is still a lot of violent crime, and yes, you should most definitely have a job lined up before moving to Youngstown or even nearby Pittsburgh or Cleveland.

Those are the negatives. The positives would be low cost of living, good schools, access to cultural institutions and events, many safe and affordable communities, etc... There is still enough manufacturing left in "the Valley" that finding a job as a welder may not be an impossibility.

Here are a couple of links that you could look through to browse job openings in the area:

vindyJOBS.com - Number One Source for Jobs and Careers – Youngstown Ohio Jobs, Warren Jobs, and Mahoning Valley Jobs. Post your resume today!

Mahoning Valley job search and jobs posting. Find a high quality employee. Find the perfect job.

I'm sure there are others too...

If you want specific information about the different communities in the Mahoning/Shenango Valley, just ask! We'd be happy to help you out.

What the other posters said. If you are not moving there for family/work reasons, and you are simply looking for a nice place in Ohio to live, then keep in mind that large numbers of people have been leaving the Youngstown area for a number of reasons, and have been doing so for several decades. You might want to investigate what those reasons are, and what, if any weight they might carry in your decision-making process. If you and/or your husband don't already have jobs lined up in the Youngstown area, and you have no other reason to move there, you might want to spend just a bit more time looking around and investigating other cities and regions before coming to a final decision about where to move.
