I have a question regarding my rent issue - in Ohio State.

On August 31st 2011, I moved out from my previous apartment. Per the lease, I sent out a written move out notice to the landlord on July 18th 2011 (45 days in advance) and followed up with them on July 26th 2011 to confirm that they got the letter (by phone call). Also I took my responsibility cleaning the apartment on the day I moved out.

After more than half an year, on March 17th 2012, I got a debt collection letter from one Attorney Law Firm saying that they are collecting one month rent plus cleaning fee on behalf of my previous landlord. I was surprised to get this letter because my previous landlord never reached me or send me bill statement after I move out! Now the first time I heard from them is a "debt collection letter"! - they claimed that they got my notice on July 26th 2011 and therefore it is not 45 days ahead of my move-out date which they would like to collect one month full rent from me even though I did not live in September 2011. Also for the cleaning charges, they did not list detailed item but just a total amount.

So now, beyond sending a debt verification letter, what else I can do to deal with them?

Thank you.

Take all the info you have that you said you sent to them and provided to your last landlord to an attorny (for free advise) and see what can be do to put this a halt. Most of the time when LL's try to pull this stunt, they're trying to cover their tracks (lack of attention to details) if they have higher up's to answer too. If it's less then $2000 I'd force their hand and make them take you to small claims court or arbitration. But first off, seek legal advice.
