ohio haters, i need your help and thoughts
i hope only ohio haters will respond to my question. i myself am a ohio hater and im trying to figure out why. at first my thought was because there is nothing going on here (i live in cinti area of ohio) but now im wondering if it is more. im wondering if it is the people and the general attitude of the place.
im wondering if it is the appalachian thing. i really want to figure this out. maybe it is a combination of things that pushed me over the edge when it comes to detesting this place. i must say that appalachian history is pretty darn interesting and even charming in a southern type of way. but im wondering if really deep inside i just cant relate to it (actually i know i cant relate to it). im very confused about why i hate it here so much. the southern type accent is kinda cute sometimes but at the same time i find myself making fun of it by imitating it once in a while. right now im thinking that maybe when you combine the accent along with the lack of education that some people have it just gets to me in a bad bad way. and it's not just that some people lack education (i dont believe you even have to go to college to be considered educated!) but there seems to be something about the mindset of the folks ive encountered. it seems as though they are totally unaware of so many things and it seems that they have no desire to seek out knowledge of these things. i have an inquiring mind (as you can tell) and i am having a hard time understanding these types of people i come across so frequently. sure every state has this type but i really think that it is too prevalent here. anyone have any thoughts/ideas about what i am saying? am i making any sense at all or is this idea of mine way off track and part of a bigger picture? p.s. i am not originally from ohio and this could be most of my problem.

First of all, i don't think this thread should be called "Ohio haters", it should be cinci haters. Secondly, not everyone in Ohio has a "southern type accent" and as far as i know, Cinci is not part of Appilacia.......

Maybe Ohio is too conservative for you. I know here in Youngstown (the other end of the state) many are socially conservative even though it's a democrat stronghold. But then again, Ohio is a state with a decent amount of variety, both geographically and socially. So maybe if you made some new acquaintences, ones that are more open-minded, that might help the situation.

For me it is because the people here are too conservative, in more of a cultural/social sense vs a political sense (as Boardmanite notes).
I am not a native Ohioan, being from Chicago, but also lived in California (the Bay Area and Sacramento) and Kentucky (Louisville & Lexington), so my opinion or feeling is based on comparing these places with Ohio, at least the Dayton area.

Hmm,
I am not surprised by the replies. I am using my shift keys now so that i (oops) so that I will be accepted more. Cincinnati is all about Appalachian history/roots btw. Living in Cinti is pretty much living in kentucky (Kentucky, sorry, it's a hard habit to break - using the shift key). So sorry if some of you were upset about the post.

My main problem with the Cincinnati area is how conservative everyone is. The last time a school levy came up in my area, people were outraged that it would add something like $50/$100,000/year to their taxes. Gimme a break. Schools need to be funded. Fund them!
Also, the Kentucky accent drives me nuts!
I can't really say anything about the rest of Ohio since I haven't spent much time out of this region.
I am also not a native of this region.

News flash: There are uneducated people everywhere, just not in Ohio or Cincinnati. There are uneducated people who speak perfect English. There are people from Kentucky with accents you could cut with a knife who are smarter than all of us combined.

What "things"? It's hard to help you figure out why you don't like Cincinnati when you're so vague. Also, "things" that one person believes are important to know about are not important to others.

So ... What's Oktoberfest all about then -- all six or seven of them? And the Fairview German Language elementary school? The St. Anthony of Padua Church Lebanese festival in Walnut Hills? Festival Hispano? You're buying a stereotype that doesn't exist.

I also love the Kentucky accent!
It makes a man sound more honest...
Makes a woman sound more sexy...
Makes any person sound more friendly!
