Athens, Ohio, is a great little progressive college town in the Appalachian foothills. There are some good vegan options and a vibrant art scene because of Ohio University. Plenty of greenspace and parks nearby, and a great bike path the runs through town and into surrounding ones.

If you want something a little bigger, I'm sure there are neighborhoods in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati that fit your needs.

I was going to say that but you beat me to it. Yellow Springs would also be a good option.

The thing about Athens is that is chock full of a bunch of punk 20 year olds who are majoring in alcohol and stupidity. I'm sure there are a number of artistic individuals who call Athens home, but dealing with stuff like this every year would get old.

It's basically an average public university sitting in the middle of nowhere. There is nothing to do besides drink, which is probably great if you're a college kid who just left home. I'm not sure how that would work out in the OP's situation.

I just graduated from OU yesterday, and yes, students are known for partying, but there are plenty of areas away from campus where you wouldn't even realize there were students nearby. The craziness is pretty well contained on the streets closest to campus. As long as you live a mile of so out from campus, you'll be able to enjoy all the benefits without any of the debauchery.
