I hope this doesn't count as advertising as I don't work for GM, but I know some people out there may need to see this. From what I've been told Lordstown has hired all of their temps and now they are trying to replace them. There are going to be a lot of retirements this year so there's a good chance of being hired in full-time.

Thanks for posting, I may put an application in there and see what happens (although I am sure they won't want someone with no experience like me )

You don't need any experience, they will train you! You just have to be able to show up, pass the drug test, stand on your feet for hours on end and learn the job. I used to work for a GM parts supplier and I didn't have any experience. I learned more working there than I ever did getting my bachelor's degree.

Although GM Lordstown is one of the largest employers in the area, you should be happy GM has decided to re-invest in this area. Would you be happy if GM decided to close the complex and ship the jobs elsewhere? If you say that this is the only corporation propping up the youngstown-warren area, then please tell me why other companies are beginning to relocate to the area, including companies from the oil and gas industry, or other companies like Anderson-Dubose? Falcon Transport adding trucks to their fleet and hiring?! V&M Star expanding and staying committed to the Valley?! The potential construction jobs with the new hotel chains coming to the area??

The oil and gas industry is going to a huge impact to the area. I have customers from the oil/gas industry that are staying in the area long term that say within 1 to 2 years, this area is going to be different and it is going to be great for Youngstown based on their experience of working in this industry in other parts of the country. We just need to give it time....

Yeah, there has always been that mentality of "have to know someone to get a job at GM." Most of those "old timers" are retiring. GM needs to hire now that people who transferred from other areas of the country have an opportunity to move back home and be at their home plant. It is not so much "who you know" these days. This is such great news, and you poke fun at it....this is an opportunity for somebody who may have lost their job recently to be able to make a good living and provide for their family.....

Having a number of relatives at the GM Mansfield plant and the long shuttered GM Assembly plant in Norwood, OH, there is a lot of truth to the "who you know mentality" at GM. If you knew someone at the plant, you could get on pretty easily a generation ago.

Thank heavens I listened to my father (former GM worker) and steered clear from that company.

here is some historical context: the area has been waiting since the late 1970s. everything since then that was tried in youngstown was enthusiastically celebrated before failure. until proven otherwise, fracking is just another basket for the area to put all of its eggs in before they crack. this time, the cracks will probably be from another minor earthquake.

i would like for something to change this time, but no one has been successful here after steel and it is quite doubtful that this time will be any different. unfortunately, the attempted gentrification of youngstown needs more than forum posts, blogs, or t-shirts to work.

It's hardly unprecedented for larger companies to use the internal referral process to hire outside workers. My company does it all of the time. The rationale: Hiring new help is an expensive proposition. Therefore, relying on our valued people's recommendations and referrals along with finding the proper resume is the best way to keep our hiring and training costs to a minimum.
