I will stay here cause I am going to learn more about Ohio and Weirton. The home is like a Cozy Nook I would call it. Deer in your back yard and that is what I want too. Our biggest was finding a great landlord and he is one of them too.

Well congrats on finding something that can work.
Steubenville is a bit of a surprise to be that bad. It may be due to the government tax dollars at work. They have relocated a lot of people on rent assistance into that general area. Some apparently are from the Katrina thing. Might have drove rents up a bit. Just a bit back there was lots of places for around $300. Screwed up a bunch of smaller towns in Jefferson county, lots of non-native types in the area, Salinesville is one town that got hit bad. Cops get a lot of business from the "Strangers".
If you want something a bit cheaper in the future and are willing to go a bit further into Jefferson County, there is a way to shortcut the travel. Route 213 just a bit further up is a "Back Way" into the more rural areas. Some nice places, small farms, etc. It is the foothills of the mountains, up a lot in elevation but flat on top. By taking the smaller township roads off 213 you can go very deep into Jefferson without adding many miles.
It may pay to get to know the entire general area better. I have been into that Somerset - Pine Grove Ridge areas fairly recently. Still looked nice.
What happened to PA??? Did the wheels really come off that bad???? People seem to want out worse than from MA, that has to be serious.

In Pa, We have to pay gas taxes adn they are raising it another 10 cents so it will bring it up to 45 cents a gallon, and they are raising our state tax as well too. Pa country is starting to turn into a multi million dollar homes where all farm lands are sold for too.
When I moved to Robinson/Crafton area there was quite a few nice land with homes and more, just this year I have seen 5 of them get torn down flatten land to build them Mirranda homes and all. I am trying to get away from it. I hate it.

Yup, I know what you mean. I hate all that represents. It is all about money and the making more of it. I used to be a contractor. The whole affair is a huge waste of resources and ruins way to many communities for the general population. Happened all over New England, totally changed the character of so many places. Called McMansions, I guess a way to show off, you have made it big.

Well if you really want to chuck it all; (Stop the World I want to get Off); you can just move a little further south down into the SE counties. There are Amish here, my town has hitching racks at most major stores as do many towns throughout the area. Lot of them are in the sawmill type business, some farm or a combo. A little more diverse and spread out than in most communities.
Whole different bag, new problem set in this area. Very low crime, low cost of living. Housing and land are cheap. House can be of very low quality, if newer it usually is way overpriced and difficult to sell. You might even get a house for well under $10K, usually needs a bunch of work but they are available all over for very cheap money if you know where and can convince somebody to sell for the real market value. It can be done, you won't get rich, makes no sense as a commercial venture in most cases. Do need a lot of the various skills to make it all happen, including being able to rehab it yourself.
There are problems, probably not for everybody. The government will leave you alone like just about no where else I have ever been in the USA. Amazing to have the Government right there with easy access but yet it will leave you alone. I went to a dog rabies clinic at a fire station and they wanted to know the dogs name but didn't ask for mine. Say what???? You can walk into anywhere including all the local government places and no guards, no guns and usually no lines. Pays your money and gets your paper, including a passport. Nobody tells you to get your hands out your pockets.
You can also find that laid back life in the areas I mentioned in Jefferson county. More expensive, a nice small farm will go up into the six digits but they are very stable areas with folks who have been in the same place for many generations. Not something you will find in most tourist books but a real trip with the right guide.

Is Ohio a good place to raise a family?
I have moved our family from Alaska to Kentucky! We JUST started to get settled when the home I bought via the internet burned. We had not been there for more then 9 months. The shock from that event left our family (6 boys) spinning. But the long and the short of that is it has been 16+ months sence we seen the insides of that home. We are still burned out! Our insurance has played a hard game leaving us waiting. My husband was laid off 6 months into the ordeal. We sepnt 7 months trying to do the repairs ourselves, on unemployment??? Double house and utilities payments. This has put our family in debt for the first time in our lives. He has had to return to Alaska to find a real paying job. We are still waiting for our frist real paycheck. We went from 60K per year in Alaska to 28K per year in Kentucky and we were NOT impressed. We wanted to raise our boys on a farm. From all the time spent working on the home we never had a chance to notice the lack of education in the area where we bought. Our children attend a Christian school and this helps, but it is very noticible. Sence we are not even back into our home as of yet I am having second thoughts on the whole kentucky thing.
Does anyone out there care to hsare information on the lay of the land in Ohio? I am also considering Indiana? I am looking for a place to buy atleast 5 acres of land (horses) and 4+ bedroom home. what is the house markets like in Ohio? Is there a huge difference between the areas? North East South West areas? I like trees and geographical characters. We are very private and do not like alot of interaction with noisey neighbors. We are looking for another Christian school and a strong church. A small town with access to shopping choices with-in a 50+/- mile radius. I also noticed the heat and humid temps. do not agree with my health here in KY what are the normal seasons like. We like laid back but not dead. We are not finatics, however I am afarid of the unkown when it comes to making life changing choices. Knowing that I have already made one bad choice.
Sorry I for the lenght, I am looking for answers.

I see that you guys are Christians. We are as well. It is hard to find nice places. Believe it or not Dover Ohio, Berlin, Sugarcreek has alot of lands and near the Amish areas as well if you don't mind them.
I am not familiar with Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia.
