Default Why Doesn't Ohio

Just finally put up the big sign that says business are not welcome. With these new proposals floating around, 7 paid sick days per year and guaranteed paid time off for new mothers. It is just more socialism that we do not need if we are ever to recover from the economic state we are in. Please add your thoughts maybe I am wrong.

Rocket, you are right-on the money! Too many "entitlement"-minded voters here have turned Ohio—a burgeoning economic powerhouse 100 years ago—into a socialist swamp today with an over-regulated, overtaxed economy kinda like that of France.

It sucks, but a solid solution in the foreseeable future is unlikely. Repubs under Voinovich & Taft wasted 16 years and blew all their good opportunities. Unions are so entrenched here, and entrepreneurship so discouraged, it's little wonder this state is "circling the bowl" economically.

Yup; a stupid idea... And I consider myself "Somewhat Liberal". My wife has sick days (which she rarely uses) but I don't get paid if I don't go to work (and turn the wheels while I'm there...) There are PLENTY of workplace issues I'd like to see addressed before paid sick days...

Wow. How in the world is seven sick days and paid time off for new mothers a big problem? Only if you run a cruel business. Its hardly a problem.

The_pines, The cost to businesses would be ENORMOUS! It's not a matter of cruelty; most employees would be honest and would only use what they need. But all it takes is for the few to abuse it. And that's before you consider what the cost to a small business owner would be in lost productivity, never mind the cost of wages that he or she would have to pay. Many of these feel-good proposals sound great until you look at the real cost of providing the benefit to employees. My industry (trucking) ius ALREADY operating on razor-thin margins, as are most businesses. There's just NO way that my comapny could afford to pay drivers for that many days off... And as Rocket1 says, it would also have the effect of Ohio losing businesses that can't afford it as well as business owners thinking about starting or relocating a business to Ohio to go elsewhere. Be careful what you wish for...

let capitolism rule...i have 11 personal leave days i use everyone, every year!
if ohio allows for 7 sick days you can count on employees being off at least 7 days with pay. i do have a choice of taking a personal leave day or using it as a holiday pay for like labor day on a monday when the place is closed.

Why doesn't Ohio put up a sign that says that men, women, and children are not welcome? That education is not welcome. That jobs are not welcome. Ohio's state colleges have raised their tuition through the roof. My two college boys are paying over $5,200 a semester (11-15 credits) at a state university (Akron area). This does not include books. Our high school has cut bussing for students even though we just passed an income tax levy. The jobs around here (NE OH) are part-time jobs in the service sector. I have to work very hard to get us out of here before our younger children get into college as things are getting ridiculous here.

P.S. - Even though we've lived here for almost four decades; I've just about had it. Ohio was a great state, it still is in some regards, and the people are good people. Something got lost along the way; I don't have the time or energy left to try to figure it out or solve it. I think it's easier moving and let the people that love Ohio, good or bad, stay here. Just my opinion.

Real simple ohio needs to cut taxes (both state and local), Cut Govement spending and start drawing bussiness back to Ohio. Plain and simple that is it.

When I pay Ohio as much income tax as I do the federal Govt. It jsut is not right. Also My city income tax bill is 1/2 of my federal income taxes.

BIG hearty thumbs-up on that! Lower taxes and less goverrnment is the best best recipe for a good economy...anywhere it's tried!

In Ohio, it'll be an uphill fight to do that. Too many people here are deeply addicted to government—no less so than one can be addicted to alchohol, narcotics, etc. Seriously, I've come to recognize government dependency as just another form of addiction & refusal to take responsibility for one's own life!

But yeah, if/when we can ever wean more Ohioans off the many forms of gov't largess they're dependent on, then we've got to talk about serious tax cuts...

Is there a twelve-step program for this?

"Hi, I'm Ted (wink, wink, nudge, nudge), and I'm addicted to the government."

"HI, TED!"
