Default Base housing at Wright-Patt

For all you military folks (or contractors)...

Any opinion on Base Housing? I've heard it has been privatized and most homes have been remodeled or newly constructed.

First, I don't actually live in base housing, but I am familiar with the area. The new hosuing (The Praries and The Woods I believe) is much better in appearence than the older units. For starters, they have the advantage of a garage. The area is more or less safe under the guard of the Wright-Patt police, but Riverside, the suburb around most of the base housing, doesn't have the best rep. Normally it's just minor problems like vandalism and petty theft. This base housing happens to be outside the gates so take that into consideration. The local mall is probably closer then the BX or commisary, but the AFRL is just up Col. Glenn Highway. These units are also served by the average Mad-River Schools.

The only on-base housing I know of is the officer and high enlisted housing off Highway 444. These units are much closer to the Materials Command and NASIC. These structures are older and I'm not nearly as familiar with them as the other ones. They do go to the Fairborn schools which I believe ranks average or lower. They also seem to have constant funding problems.

Nearby communities with a safe family atmosphere and good to excellent schools include Beavercreek (closest), Kettering, Bellbrook, Centerville, and Springboro (furthest). To the north there is Huber Heights, Vandalia, and Tipp City. Check out HIgirls' posts as she has asked about a number of these suburbs.
