From my research online and brief travels through the area, Athens, OH sounds like a good match for me. If I had more money.

I have found listings for places I can afford in Nelsonville, though.
I've been reading articles about the route 33 bypass, and how it's affecting the town; some businesses have shut down, but my mom tells me they're working to revitalize the town's art & attractions as a countermeasure.

What is it like living in Nelsonville right now? Is it artsy? Is it safe? Does the future bode better, worse, or the same?

I never lived there but have been there many times.

It is safe. I doubt the future will change much. It's an easy drive to Athens and/or Columbus.

The town is trashy and so are the people.

If I were going to move to Southeastern Ohio I would pick Athens, Marietta or Belpre. The rest of the area is crap.

People think the bypass will hurt but it won't. The same thing happend in Lancaster and there hasn't been a drop in business traffic. This is due to most people who stop and shop in Lancaster being locals. Most people driving through are going to or from Columbus to Athens or Interstate 77. I made the drive for 5 years straight and stopped one time in Nelsonville.

Lancaster has a much, much bigger leg to stand on.

Nelsonville never had much going on before. Nothing will change. Except I'm glad they built that little strip mall with the newer Subway. The old one reeeeeeeeally creeped me out.

You're much better off finding a place in Athens. It really isn't that expensive.

The Logan area might be another place to consider.

For the record, I lived in Athens while attending OU and my now husband used to live in Nelsonville. He was offered a job there but he couldn't bring himself to live in Nelsonville again.

The bypass has effected Nelsonville. Several business have shut down and the place now looks like a ghost town.
