I understand your wanting to move to America. This is a great country!

But for God's sake, my Aussie friend! Why, oh why Ohio?? Of all the mighty states in the union, why would you choose Ohio?

Where the sky is always grey, the people are sad, the cities are in crisis, the suburbs are bland and boring, jobs are hard to find and there's just this depressing feeling lingering over the state.

Come visit, then decide. You're welcome to stay in Manhattan.

Cheers!

Default The Heart of it All.

The motto of Ohio is that we are "the heart of it all", partly because the state is somewhat shaped like a heart. I applaud your intrest in Ohio even if you ultimately choose a different location. The only reccommendation I can give you is that Ohio is a larger state which allows for quite a bit of diversity between different locations.

Northwest Ohio is flat, has the coldest winter, but is not effected by lake-effect snow.(Toledo is the largest city and is sister cities with Toledo, Spain)

Northeast is a mix of valley and flat lands and is directly in the snow belt (Cleveland was voted as one of the most diverse large cities in the United States).

Southeast is all valley and hills but alot of city's have a struggling economy leading to poor public education systems. This is a general statement and each city should be looked at individually, Marrietta is one exception to the rule.

Soutwest Ohio is similar to Northeast Ohio but is generally 10 to 15 degrees warmer and doesn't get near as much snow. (Cincinatti was recently voted as one of the best big cities to live in).

Central Ohio is pretty much all valley and hills as well with Columbus directly in the center. If you are into college football...OSU is one of the constant contenders for the national title.

When someone puts down Ohio, I usually attribute that to lack of experience from living in other places (in and out of Ohio). I have travelled extensively over the United States as well as the World and Ohio has alot to offer as long as you dont mind winter. Again, there are exceptions to the rule as Cincinnatti generally has pretty calm winters compared to the rest of the state. If there is something specific you "must have" or have concerns about, list it and I'll see what I can do....good luck!!

I moved to Wellington in '89 & presently live in a tiny community just 5 miles south of Wellington. If there's any information you need maybe I can help. My husband was born & raised in this area too.
Wellington is a quaint village with a population around 4,500 (maybe more). There are quite a few beautiful old homes throughout town.
Lake Erie is about 40 minutes north of town which means we can get lake effect snow. It literally depends on which direction the wind blows. However, we don't get as much as our eastern neighbors such as Cleveland. East of Cleveland, in the major snow belt, gets hammered with quite a bit of snow. The terrain around Wellington is pretty flat which can mean white-out driving conditions periodically with blowing snow. Our summers can get hot & humid maybe late June thru July & August. Fall season here can be quite nice.
Employment here in Lorain County has taken a big hit in the last few years. We've lost a great deal of manufacturing jobs. Employment can be tough unless you're in the medical field. In Cleveland, & many of the surrounding communities there are great medical facilities.
As for crime in Wellington, it still seems pretty safe. I always felt safe taking a walk in & around town - even late at night. There are some petty crimes & D.U.I.'s. The comments you here about Wellington is there are just as many bars as there are churchs.
Wellington is at a good crossroads if you need to commute to larger communities for work or entertainment.
I won't ramble anymore; here to help if you need anymore info. bjb123

Well said! Way to shut up the naysayers. I enjoyed Ohio! Never lived there, but I really enjoyed bumming around it for almost 2 weeks. Some beautiful areas that reminded me of PA...

Ohio is a great state. Lived here all my life. If you like land you can certainly find it. The state varies in terrain depending on the area. Rolling hills in the south and flat in the north. Wonderful trees and big ole lake Erie for plenty of water sports and other water fun. Low cost of living. At least give it a drive through. I love Ohio

Depends on where you go in the state, as with many other states. Just out of curiosity, was your friend playing at the Alrosa Villa on December 8, 2004?

Would it be weird for me to say I love Manhattan for everything Ohio isn't, and love Ohio for everything Manhattan isn't?

I am an aussie who lived in Ohio for 2 years. Trust me, there are hundreds of better places in the US for an aussie to move to than here. The culture shock compared to the 2 places is huge. I could talk about this for hours, most people in the place haven't even met an aussie b4. Sometimes, older ladies would cry because I was the only 'au-strail-yen' they ever met. While it is flattering, there is NO escaping back to being australian AT ALL. You can't just go and have a meat pie or a vegemite sandwich. If you want to know anything else, please feel free to PM me and I would be glad to let you know any, and everything you need to know. Good Luck.
