I agree with those above who've said Northern and Southern Ohio are like two separate states.

But I for one, love Southern Ohio and am proud to be from down yonder. Socially, culturally and politically, I feel a much stronger affinity with Cincinnati—and Kentucky!—than I ever have or ever will feel with anyplace north of I-70.

No longer being connected to socialist Cleveland would be very nice, indeed.
Amen to everything you said... come on home.

Cincy is a town covering counties in 2 states (or 3 if you count Indiana too), so this question of consigned identity only in Ohio has contributed to the confusion of outsiders for years. For years I have felt that everything inside 275 is it's own entity: Cincinnati, USA, with certain ties to each of the states around it. Not surprised to hear that most people from up north wouldn't care / would like to see the blue grass section annexed... we do get more love from Kentucky than Ohio (friends from Lexington and in-between love hanging out up in the city and always have good things to say about it; Louisville sometimes not, but they are just jealous of our status as the number one ohio river town!).

The Hocking Hills are unique and the entire area woodsy and unlike Columbus, Zanesville, etc. I grew up in Columbus - and it might sound strange but I was living back there near Cincy for a year and a half ... and as close as I got to Columbus was Mt. Sterling - just no desire to see it again.
Have a pleasant one!
Thanks Rocky! Yeah, those are all neat little towns. I've heard Athens is one of the more "haunted" places around, and there are some enthusiasts who like to tour there based on that.

Those old river towns are so beautiful and historic, esp. Marietta and Portsmouth—even though the latter has been hard-hit economically.

Whenever I'm in the Hocking Hills, it's almost easy to forget I'm even in Ohio. It's especially easy to forget I'm just an hour away from stressed-out-yuppie-rat-race-rude-attitude Columbus. Ah, the hills...

Take it e-z, friend!

Thanks, cincyUK! I can tell you'd be an awesome neighbor

Whenever any jobs turn up in my field down in the Cincy area, I always send a resume and apply. So who knows, one of these days?

Louisville...Cincinnati-envy...haha! Yeah, I could see that

The thread is specific to whether or not Cincinnati should secede from Ohio and become a separate entity as a state or as a sort of "Washington DC" of the Ohio Valley - or cast it's lot with either KY or IN - the idea being that Cincy is too cool for Ohio ... an idea I almost agree with and 30 years ago would definitely have agreed with.
Now, I don't recall where Bridgeport is - but I would lay odds that, if a person isn't from the Cincy area and/or hasn't spent a lot of time around there at some point - then they won't understand the nature of the post and might even take offense at an insinuated insult levied straight in the face of Ohio in general - but it's not ... it's just reality as Columbus cares about Columbus, Cleveland cares about Cleveland, Akron cares about The Steelers, Van Wert cares about Root Beer and Portsmouth cares about anything it can and of course, Athens cares about when the next crop will be ready up by Marietta and also the price of coal today while Cincinnati cares about it's hair, it's Reds, it's Bengals, it's Zoo, Newport, Lexington, Atlanta and Pagosa Springs Colorado, among many other things.
Hope I was able to help you sort this one out, The Don.

Until recently I lived in North East Ohio, in the land of the socialists, and speaking for myself, Cincinnati may as well have been on another planet. In all the time I lived there, I doubt I met one single person from there or heard anything about it in the news, etc. If I would have met someone from there, I'm sure I would have said: "Cincinnati. Where is that again?"

Very well said - not meant as any disrespect, and I could see how it would be difficult to understand from a different place. RockyMtnr puts it very well for outsiders to understand.

I just looked up Bridgeport on Google maps and it happens to be a border town next to Wheeling, WV. I probably drove through there once on the way to play Wheeling Jesuit... very industrial area.

And your post, regardless of how you intend it, hi-lites a commonly held perception of folks from Akron, Canton, etc., - that they are snooty and care about nothing outside of their area - which, in an Ohioan's book, lumps them with Pennsylvanians.
Not that I'm into such petty state-to-state rivalries. Shucks, I live on the west coast for a reason!

Boardman is not in the Akron/Canton area. It is a suburb of Youngstown.
Snooty and Youngstown do not belong in the same sentence.
It does have its attributes, though.
