plus, there is a fair number of interest groups which really get stoked on telling people what they can or can not do. as is shown by one wing of the republican party, there are a number of people who are willing to vote against their own self-interest if it means limiting what other people can do.
Truer words were never spoken!

Far too much money is wasted on drug enforcement that should be spent on other issues such as rehab and other social issues. That's the short answer, anyway.
I agree also! Never have, never will, but the enforcement of the drug laws waste tons of time and money and are not effective.

If it were legal but controlled, like alcohol, it would free up police time, court time, and jail spots. It would save tons of money, and if they set up "state stores" for drugs like some do for alcohol, think of all the money to be made!

Exactly! The problem is, people like us who have common sense never get elected. (But who'd want to swim in that cesspool, anyway!) As long as there are so many interests that profit from the status quo, it'll never change...sigh.

Anything's possible if you're drinking buddies with the county board of elections chair.

Possession of an ounce or less is a minor misdemeanor. However, possession of paraphernalia has really stiff penalties (pipe, bong, etc.) There's the gotcha. It's ridiculous.

I'm especially proud to be an American when I hear that the cops stop someone and find a large amount of cash on them. So they confiscate the cash AND his vehicle because they are "drug proceeds"... I'll bet if you took dope dogs into a large bank and had them sniff the cash on hand, I'm sure the dogs would find some kind of residue... So tell me again why we're the most free nation in the world...

I dont care.

I dont smoke, i got better stuff to do, but it seems that making it legal would make it easier on the police and smokers alike. Mary Jane may burn brain cells but its not in the same class as hard drugs like heroin, etc. Dont want to run into a slippery slope though.
