You're mostly right about the housing being built in Youngstown. The new houses on the north side are being sold at a price the area can support, but less than a new house would probably sell for normally. But, what Traveler87 was referring to is private development in downtown to convert the Realty, Wick, and Erie Terminal buildings into high-end condos/apartments. I've been told the rents will range from $900-$1200. (I think this is too pricey. For that kind of money, I could buy and restore one of the mansions on 5th ave.)

No I am not commenting on the article you have read, I am commenting on your statements. I am talking about new houses built near McKelvey lake, and even new homes off of Wirt St. Those are the new houses being built in Youngstown. Have you been there? Do you even know what you are posting about? Do you even know where brier hill is? You probably have never been there, so don't tell us from Rocky River how wonderful it is that new housing is being built on the north side. New housing in the ghetto is for displaced ghetto residents who have made the ghetto what it is. Jay Williams is the only guy with the gumption to tear down those old junk houses that have been destroyed by the people who are receiving those new houses for dirt cheap. This is not urban development by real estate developers trying to beautify the neighborhood and spark a sense of "urban renewal". Those homes are subsidized by the government for low income people. (hand out) If you give someone a $150,000 house and let them pay next to nothing for it, then they have no investment in it. They have no incentive to keep the house maintained. Why should they? It isn't their money, just the money hard working tax paying Americans owe them. Those houses in 20 years will be no better than the ones they just tore down.

Sure, downtown has come a long way from where it was 10 years ago. It is starting to become a real hub. It is nice that some are re-investing down there. It is moving, albeit slowly, in the right direction. Just keep in mind, until all the suburbanites who love Youngstown (i.e. Dan Rivers to start) but would never live there in a million years move back into the city, it will never become anything more than a housing project and hub in the illegal drug economy.
What are you talking about Rocky River for? This thread is meant for Youngstown. None of what you just said has anything to do with what the article I read, and then posted was about. Like I said before, I am done, you can continue to rant lol.

Thank you as I am trying to prove a point on an article I read, he goes out of his way to argue about it.

Was in Boardman today and drove down to the lake. Thanks for letting me know it was there. Probably would have taken me 50 years to figure it out.. haha

The author of the Shout Youngstown blog recently posted an article about his recent tour of the Taft Technology Center. For those of us who see it everyday, it's nice to see what is going on inside. For those of us who aren't in the area, (or out of the country,.. Boardmanite) you can get a pretty good idea of what the building will look like when complete.

i will shout youngstown: 1st look inside the new technology center

Enjoy!

Fortunately Jay Williams has put a stop to building those subsidized houses in the city. I've seen some on the East Side that were already completely trashed.

And yeah, the apartments and condos that supposedly are coming to downtown are kind of expensive. $900-$1200 is A LOT of money for rent in Youngstown. I could see much more of a demand for medium-priced apartments downtown. These projects seem to have stalled, though. Any word on when/if these projects will be completed?

Thanks for posting that! The building's sure coming along. It looks nice. I like the skylights for natural lighting.

The Realty building "should" be completed late this year. It received approval for the state's historic preservation tax credit, so now work can begin. (Work can't begin on the other two until they receive approval--or not--for the same tax credit.) But, I haven't seen evidence that work has started yet. According to a Vindy article, he wanted to start work by the end of January.

Wink Moving to Youngstown from Phoenix, Questions!!

I am about to buy a house on the 3000 block of Kiwatha Street, am retired and buying there because the prices are so low. Am I making a mistake?? It is a very nice home, and with my pension is about the best price I could find anywhere in the USA for the money. Many retired people in the west are being priced out of the market. Perhaps a movement of people back to their roots is coming. Possiblly cities like Youngstown could take advantage of the situation. I have lots of friends who are aghast at what I am doing, they think have lost my mind, but I grew up in Indiana and worked for YST, so I am somewhat aware. Kiwatha is really a nice looking area. Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

I took a quick look on Google Earth last night. It looked like it was on the wrong side of Lake Newport. I'm not familiar with that street, but I see that Hillman is very close. That's not a good one. I'll let someone else make a more accurate call on it.

This is our County tax website. You can search by name or address. It tells you a pretty good history of house sales, and taxes, and appraisals. Some on that street are going close to 80k. Others are less than 25k. The only thing I will say is, any house under 15k, anywhere in the Country is not worth living in.
