Kiwatha is one of those streets on the South Side of Youngstown that still has decent houses that are kept up for the most part. It's right by the park, which is a big plus. However, the area around it is a mess. You'd be extremely close to the intersection of Canfield Rd, Glenwood Ave, and Indianola Ave. (Look for it on mapquest.) That intersection is definitely not a place you want to spend any time at. I don't think I'd move there myself to be honest. And if I did, I'd have a couple huge, scary looking dogs.

That's just my two cents...

Default Thanks for the reply

I do have 4 large dogs, and the location is just too beautiful to pass up, hope I am making the right decision.

I would encourage you to get involved with your block watch. Getting to know your neighbors is the best way to help keep your neighborhood nice once you move there.

Or, you could always look on the west side of the park. The home prices would be very similar to what you're seeing on Kiwatha, and you won't have the stigma of living on the "south side."

Buy a gun and get a concealed carry permit.

Hmm, I don't know if that's necessary. While Kiwatha is near one of the worst areas in Youngstown, it's not IN the worst area. But, if some think this neighborhood is that bad, I would at least consider talking to some of your potential neighbors before I bought a house there.

That street is in the city's 5th ward. The 5th ward councilman is Paul Drennen (330-550-2283) I'm not sure he would be as helpful as a potential neighbor, but maybe you could give him a call?

You may be just fine there. Like I said, that street itself is still nice. But just be aware of your surroundings and don't take chances. Good luck!

Carrying a gun probably isn't necessary, but it is possible in the state of Ohio, just so you know. I hope my comment wasn't taken the wrong way. Having protection, weather it be a gun or your 4 dogs wouldn't be a bad thing. I don't think people will bother you as long as you mind your own business and stay out of bad areas.

Just some advice to those looking in Youngstown or the surrounding areas, if a house is priced below 30k dollars its probably not in a very good area. If it's priced in the 40k or above depending on size it might be ok. That's why we are here, to let you know what is safe and what is not. I know some condos in a very decent area that sell between 30k and 60k dollars. It just depends on the age of the structure, repairs needed, and most importantly, location, location, location!

Default Thanks for the info so far, more please!!!

The guy who lived in the house was 85, and he passed recently, but he lived there alone, and as far as I am able to find out he never had any problems. Does not mean that there could be something in the future. I really hope Youngstown can get over these problems, as it looks like it was once a very beautiful city. Still has much going for it, with a park like Mill Creek. People really need to get involved and pressure their politicians. I guess that I will move foreward with the purchase of this property, as fear is a thing we must all face, but we can't let it stop us from living our lives. I will try to get to know the neighbors right away, and being retired, I am home most of the time, and could be of value as a set of eyes in the block watch program. I am enamored with the park and cant wait to walk those trails, and enjoy the benifits of the same. Also will keep up with this blog forever, as it seems to be a very good forum.

Thanks,
Fred

fhwolf,

I think it's great that you are moving to Youngstown and i like that you are looking at getting involved. If we could get more people like you to move there it could become a much safer place. You might be right about people moving back to cities like Youngstown. One of my professors at Kent said he knows of 4 NYC cops that moved to the same block on the west side when they retired and they love it.

One of the good things about the southside is that it has a vacancy rate of something like 70%. Once the city finishes tearing down the abandoned houses, the southside will probably be one of the first areas that goes back to nature. Have you checked out Youngstown 2010 ????

Here are some videos pertaining to the plan Video on Demand
(scroll almost to the bottom and you will see the 2010 logo and videos)

Right now many people in Youngstown (a lot of young people) are looking for ways to turn the city around. You'll find a lot of the older folks have a very bad attitude due to what they've seen happen to Y-town over the past 35 years (and i really don't blame them). My generation doesn't really remember the mills and we don't know what it was like to live in Youngstown when it was booming. So, i think our attitude is, "Things can only get better, but we have to work to make it happen". I think it's starting to happen, if you haven't got a chance, check out the following links:

Ok, i think that's enough to keep you busy for a while!!! Welcome to Youngstown, the Mahoning Valley, and NE Ohio!
