Move to Oberlin Ohio wwww.oberlin.org If you live here and your kids go to High School here, they can qualify for a FREE COLLEGE EDUCATION at Oberlin College, it is called the "oberlin partnership program" Oberlin is an easy 20 min commute to CLeveland. It is also not in the snow belt. Moderator cut: advertising Oberlin has lots of kids activities and the schools are great with free tutoring available in your home via the college. We have the common ground summer camps and lots of art programs. We have a world class art museum and concerts every weekend on the square such as well known jazz acts. Moderator cut: personal information

The OP will be working in Painesville. I'm thinking an Oberlin-Painesville commute would be quite impractical, especially considering there are plenty of decent areas with great schools that are much closer...

Actually we're preparing for a moving to Kila Montana. Real snow country there . Right next to Blacktail Mnt Ski resort. They have been getting 4" - 6" a day every day for the last week just after a blizzard dumped on them.
Just as soon as things settle down out there a bit next month, we're heading out to purchasing one of a half dozen 10 acre lots I have had my eye on for some time. Starting on a new house this summer. Can't wait !!!! If all goes well, we'll be in MT within a year and a half. Then I got to try unloading property around here .

Thats funny we're currently in Bozeman MT and thinking of leaving. Don't get me wrong Montana is awesome. But we really want to own a farm and there's just nothing we can afford out here. We've been here 10 years and looking for a farm for the past 5. Now we're looking at coming back east. We're originally from Columbus.
Been looking in NE Ohio, the U.P. and Northern Maine. Those are about the only northern climate state with affordable farms that we've found. I hate the thought of leaving Montana we worked so hard to get out here, but it's just too expensive.

Painesville is a crap-shack seedy slum town, I suggest you live in Concord Township, Mentor, Perry Township, or Madison. Also you can't go wrong with the portions of Ashtabula County right along the Lake County border. However, I'd recommend against the city of Ashtabula, it's a crap-shack seedy slum town.
Conneaut is nice and safe, but it is boring, rather dull, and has a poor city government. It might be a bit far for a commute to Painesville but my dad did a Conneaut to Cuyahoga County commute for a while. So you should be able to manage a Conneaut to Lake County commute, if that's what you want to do. Note, it will get very bad in the winter.
I'd suggest you don't live more than 20-30 minutes away from Painesville, probably somewhere in Concord Township, Madison, or Perry. They're all decent places, but watch out for the rising prices of new homes in the Mentor/Concord area.
Also, the first thing you ought to do when you get to Lake County is go over to Atwell's Police and Fire-
207 Chestnut St
Painesville, OH 44077
Ask them about the concealed carry training class with the Phoenix center, and then sign up for the class (it's about $100 dollars). Then when the class is over and you get your certificate, follow the rest of these steps-
http://www.lakecountyohio.org/sherif...ealedcarry.htm
Then you get your permit and can carry concealed (which will be a benefit being in the Painesville area so often, as the place is sort of seedy and has more crime than any other area of Lake County that I know of).

I okay with a little bit of a lengthy drive if that's necessary (~30-40 miles). I currently drive 1 hour to and from work each day, so the drive doesn't matter that much. The most important things to me are schools, crime and the availability of social life.
So far I've read about Jefferson and Ashtabula, but I also think it might be nice to live close to Lake Erie. Any help/guidance/advice this forum could provide would be much appreciated.

Ashtabula is dieing town and downtown is go downhill fast all jobs and tax base is leaving cleaveland for many reason and if that doesn't bother you and that is cool. Good luck in your move and moving from chicago to cleveland can't be much different climate wise and now city wise never been to chicago it might have more going on but for coruption in goverment that is bad I hear.

What? First of all they were looking for social life, of which this is virtually none (other than a few wineries) east of Painesville, so to find it they will be spending money driving all over. Second of all, in case you haven't noticed, homes are cheaper in Willowick, Eastlake, Wickliffe, etc. than in Perry and Madison, and are in my opinion nicer places to live unless you are the type of person that hates being near other people. The school districts in Lake County are all pretty comparable as well. For example, Willowick and Willoughby Hills residents have the choice of sending their kids to either Eastlake North or Willoughby South High Schools, both of which are good schools.
As far as Oberlin goes, as much of a city guy as I am, I have to say that it's a nice little town, especially if you are fairly left-leaning. If it's true, you can't pass up a free education at Oberlin College, one of the top liberal arts schools in the country, which now costs over $50k a year. The drive to Painesville from there is REALLY far, though. Like, an hour and a half far at rush hour, and double that (at least) in snow.
I personally think your best bet is one of the eastern suburbs, either in western Lake County or eastern Cuyahoga County. This will be not too far from your job in Painesville, not too far from tons of social life and attractions around Cleveland, and in an area with good schools and affordable homes.

If you give me an area in Chicago you like I can help give you a comparable place around Cleveland. I am familiar with both.
I would probably go with Willoughby myself. It has a nice older downtown with some bars and restaurants and is also a good area for families. If you want a more rural setting head east to Madison. I also like Fairport Harbor, which has a nice small town feel to it and is on the lake.
If you are more concered with a social life I would go with Lakewood (good schools, on the lake) or maybe Cleveland Heights (not the greatest schools), but your commute will be much worse.
