so last Friday we drove down from Cleveland to Hilton - took 77 to 26 to I-95. Suffice to say the traffic in charlotte, around Columbia and 95 near 278 to Hilton head was ridiculous. a 12 hour trip took 16 hours. Sat in traffic just by lake norman for an hour and by Columbia where 77 meets 26 for 2 hours due to construction. We want to find an alternate route home. any suggestions? we leave the crack of dawn Saturday morning

spring break, what do you expect? Don't go through Charlotte M-F 7-9am, 4-6pm rush traffic. Because of Spring Break traffic from the beach I-77 is always going to have traffic from them Buckeye fans coming and going from the piece of heaven.

Leaving on Saturday and that early you should be fine. Most people head back on Sunday. Staying on 95 to pop back up at 74 is just going get you caught in the Myrtle Beach departees traffic. Going through Knoxville and Cinci takes you way west.

You went the fastest most direct route.

I've never had that kind of issue around Lake Norman unless it was during rush hour or a warm Saturday/Sunday

The Bluffton/Hilton Head exit off 95 is almost always jammed...through many trips to my time share down there I've learned you just have to be patient since HH is not right off 95 like it looks on the map.
