But right now I think the best thing to do is to hunker down hold on and ride this recession out like a very turbulent plane trip and hope the plane doesn’t crash. The sun will eventually rise again, yes even on Ohio and the more I think about it the more I think I want to be a part of the reemergence of Ohio as a real economic and social powerhouse in the nation. Yes you're right about the global impact. My husband and I have been in S.E. Ohio the last couple of months due to family obligations. I was born and raised in Ohio but spent the last 8 years living in Alaska. Friends in AK felt that due to the oil they'd be safe, as well as so many now moving to AK. seem to think. However, there is no safe place that is booming with work. I do agree with you that the sun will eventually rise again and Ohio is just as good a place to ride out this storm. N.C. seemed to have lots of jobs then everybody headed there and they faced the same economic problems they faced where they left.

Your right about N.C Alaskapat528 from what I've read on some N.C boards there are lots of folks moving down to N.C recently many form Ohio, and the job market down there is starting to show the influx. N.C was one of the locations my wife and I were looking at moving to, but we're postponing any move for 4 or 5 years to see how the housing market recovers. Can't sell a house for less then you owe.

We are hanging onto our house in Alaska while we're here in S.E. Ohio; it's a time where you just are not sure what to do or what the best thing to do is.

Good luck to you in finding happiness wherever you go. But I must disspell this myth. The job market is hardly rosier in many areas than around Cleveland.

Unemployment Rates for Metropolitan Areas

Unemployment rates by MSA:
Cleveland, TN - 10.0%
Cleveland, OH - 8.7%
Akron, OH - 9.8%

We're moving there because my husband is being transfered. I wouldn't be making a move in this economy otherwise, but thank you.

I'm not doubting the reasons for your move or telling you not to (especially if you like mountains). I'm just trying to help other posters out by refuting the myth that jobs are so much more scarce in Ohio than elsewhere. You hinted at that with some of your comments.

Anyways, good luck in wherever life takes you.

1) Current or former Ohio location:Stow

2) Why do you want to leave or have left?:Wife finished school, no jobs here for her. Even if there were we'd probably leave anyways.

3) Where outside of Ohio and why: Somewhere in the Northeast. NY,NJ - Even mid-atlantic states such as VA, MD or NC. Close to a large city.

4) 2nd and 3rd Place Choices: CA or Hawaii

5) What’s currently holding you back from moving if you haven't already left?: Just waiting for the wife to find a job, then its moving time.

6) Anything else you want to say? I am originally from NY and moved to OH for school, then bounced around NY and TX and ended back in Ohio so the wife can get her PhD. In the years that we've been here it has for the most part been OK but the past few years have been a struggle.

IMO, Ohio is a very easy, generic place to live. Cheap rent/housing, weather isn't too bad, traffic isn't too bad, etc. However when it comes time to actually do something it runs out very quickly. Very little unique "non-Applebees" places to eat, and when you have someone suggest "Oh, try this place" it isn't that good. Very little entertainment/actvities outside of hanging out with white trash at "Rockin' on the river" or going to some bland festival. Seems like everything closes by 8 or 9pm.

People in Ohio for the most part are friendly. They mean well, but they need to get the chip off of their collective shoulders. You see this with discussion about jobs, casinos, rebuilding Cleveland, ALL OF THERE SPORTS TEAMS (Even those die hard Ohio State fans who never attended The Ohio State University. BTW, technically its not The OSU, its A OSU. Kent State, Youngstown State are also State run schools. There is more than one, making it an A, not a The.). Stubborness ruins alot of why Ohio is failing as a state, coupled with the fact that it has older residents who b*tch about everything and talk about how great everything was 50 years ago. You want to rebuild Cleveland? Put stuff downtown that people would want to go to! Look at your neighbors in Indy and Pittsburgh - Good downtowns with all sorts of shops, restaurants and venues, but the only thing that keeps coming up is a downtown casino which would make us the new Detroit.

Akron is another animal in itself. People here are afraid of their own shadow. Quasi-security moms who suspect everyone. One time at the Chapel Hill Target a Mom and her kid were shopping. Kid was in the cart and dropped a toy, which most kids do. Mom didnt notice, so I picked it up and walked over to her and said "Ma'am, your kid dropped this" and she almost jumped out of her skin. She grabbed it and scattered away without thanking me. I know this is one person but this is a general attitude around Akron: Everyone is out to get you!

Basically you get what you pay for. I want more, so I will pay more, but will miss the following things when we move:

-Rays Place/The Loft in Kent
-The Metro Parks
-Brandywine Golf Course in Peninsula, and ALMOST paring the back 9.
-Sarahs Winery next to Blossom
-Otanis in the Valley
-Vegertarian restaurant next to Luigis in Downtown Akron
-Cleveland Rain Forest
-Aurora Farms

As an Ohio native who no longer lives there I think you make some good points, but there are a couple things I would have to disagree with:

1. Cleveland has plenty of non-chain restaurants to choose from. Yes, if you stay in the burbs you will be surrounded by an abundance of generic chain places, but Cleveland's neighborhoods and inner suburbs have a good amount of mom & pop and ethnic restaurants to choose from.

I will agree that Akron is a bit lacking in the culinary department if you come from a large city. I used to live in Akron and I can't say there is really anything as far as restaurants go that I miss. Although, my favorite bar of all time is in Akron.

2. I find there is plenty to do in downtown Cleveland for entertainment, and certainly more than in Indy and Pittsburgh. To compare it to Detroit's downtown is ridiculous. It has two nightlife districts, Rock Hall, Science Center, and three pro sports teams. That is more than most downtowns have as far as entertainment goes. My biggest problem with downtown Cleveland is lack of residents (although this is changing slowly) and not having enough day-to-day amenities to function as a proper urban residential neighborhood.
