If you are not careful you could get trapped in Ohio. You can get comfortable enough and spend your whole life there.

Truer words have never been spoken! That's what happened to me...inertia and a well-paying job makes it easy to stay here, easy to ignore or supress that gnawing feeling or realization in the back of my head that no, this isn't a good place (for me), that it's just not a good fit.
When that culture shock hit when I first move here I should have taken that lesson and quit and moved back to California.

Can I ask a question to those that moved here to Ohio? What are the culture shocks? I'm not being sarcastic but having been born and raised here I'm ignorant to what it is that shocks people about Ohio besides all the fat people. LOL

I watched five buses loaded down with immigrants roll out of Houston Texas on 06/05/2007. They were driving to down town Dayton Ohio and they were dropped off.

Just an update...Finally moved to Colorado Springs, and it is unbeleivable here. Should have done it 10 years ago.

TELL IT LIKE IT IS
1) Current or former Ohio location:
Cincinnati--now living in Silver Spring Md --right outside of DC.
2) Why do you want to leave or have left?: Job market sucked for college grads that did not want to work low-level service CSR jobs--or for 5/3 Bank!.
3) Where outside of Ohio and why:0
4) 2nd and 3rd Place Choices:0 Dallas -no other choice..
5) What’s currently holding you back from moving if you haven't already left?:
Fear kept us in Oh for too long.
6) Anything else you want to say? I miss my old town and friends, but not enough to EVER move back. There are so many cities nearby to explore, the job market here is much better. There are a LOT of entertainment venues and concerts and as a minority there are a LOT of NICE things to do--away from the rough crowd. I get to see others that look like me do well financially and I finally feel like my degree is being utilized.

1 - Alliance-Canton area
2 - Left so my wife could have a teaching job after having been laid off 2 straight years from 2 different places due to job cuts, not to mention that the positions were not even what she went to school for
3 - Columbia, SC - plenty of teaching jobs here, we looked for an area a little larger than Canton, but not too big, yet that is growing. Wanted a better climate which we get here, and a place that I could find a position relatively easy in my profession, which I was able too. Plus we are less than 2 hours from the beach and about 2 from the mountains, 90 minutes to Charlotte, and around 2 hours to Savannah & 3 to Atlanta. Pretty nice location to be at.
4 - Also looked a little at Raleigh, Charlotte, & Charleston, however, the real estate prices in those locations are significantly higher, plus Charlotte & Raleigh are a little larger than we'd prefer.
5 - N/a
6 - It's sad to see the NE Ohio areas continue to decline, I hope the best for the area, still have a lot of family & friends, and it will probably always be 'home' to us, but it just was too depressing to stay. The weather here is on a whole other level, a little hot right now, but the winter is awesome, and I'll take heat over cold any day.

TELL IT LIKE IT IS
1) Current or former Ohio location:Northern suburb of Cincinnati
2) Why do you want to leave or have left?: the weather and health issues negatively impacted by the weather, seven months of the year are too cold, gray, and dreary for me to enjoy being outside
3) Where outside of Ohio and why: Florida for the sunshine, warmth, and ability to be outside the majority of the year without being too cold.
4) 2nd and 3rd Place Choices: no other choice now because we're in the process of purchasing a home there
5) What’s currently holding you back from moving if you haven't already left?:
kids in high school, careers, obligations
6) Anything else you want to say? The Cincinnati area is a good, safe, friendly place to raise a family, get an education, have a career, and live a life, but we're ready to move on to the next stage of our lives in a sunny warm locale.
