In 2007, the Republicans pre-empted the "home rule" right of Ohio cities to prevent the open carry of firearms. So now, in all of Ohio, there is a permissive right (no license required) to carry all legal firearms in public.

Should the home rule right of Ohio cities to ban open carry be restored, and should other jurisdictions such as counties, villages and townships also be allowed to ban open carry of firearms? A county-wide ban would apply to all cities, villages, townships, etc., within the county. Open carry of firearms as otherwise legally permitted would be allowed during all hunting seasons.

Ohio Supreme Court upholds state law blocking Cleveland's gun law | cleveland.com

The shootings of police officers in Baton Rouge today were carried out by an individual openly carrying an assault rifle, and the Cleveland police union wants at least a temporary ban on open carry in Cleveland for the duration of the RNC. If open carry was outlawed, police officers could immediately consider an individual openly carrying a weapon as a law breaker and potentially hostile.

It's a freakin' stupid concept to begin with....we live in a civilized society, not the Wild West. There is absolutely no reason for people to be openly carrying firearms unless they're law enforcement or carrying large amounts of valuables (i.e. armored truck security).

Right. As if passing some law is going to keep somebody from going postal. There are plenty of laws on the books. All they do is restrict law-abiding citizens. The lawbreakers don't care and just do what they want anyway.

That doesn't explain why we should allow people to walk through city streets toting guns like it's Mogadishu. There are already CCW laws on the books for those who carry for self-defense purposes. Creating laws allowing people to carry openly make it impossible to know who is "exercising their rights" and who is about to open fire on the public.

Default Number of registered guns in Ohio

I'm surprised that there are only 11.4 registered guns per 1,000 residents in Ohio.

We have Trump supporters with AK-47's strapped on their back strolling around Downtown Cleveland in broad daylight. If that isn't a recipe for disaster, especially given recent national events, then I don't know what is.

In this specific situation the firearms are not being used for sport or protection. If you want to go hunting with your son or daughter or believe having a firearm in your private household makes your family safer go for it. I don't see why you should be able to gallivant around a downtown area in broad day light with a deadly weapon.

Basic psychology can provide the answer as to why these fools exist.

Many gun owners would rather convert to Islam than to register a gun with the government.
