This question would better be asked in a separate thread, but i can give some input. I live in the Youngstown-Warren Metro and i would say most areas around city are very safe. As for the city itself i'm sure you've heard some horror stories, but most crime occurs on the east and west sides of town. Downtown Youngstown is undergoing a transformation right now and i consider it pretty safe as well. I'm sure since your daughter is just going to be a weekend anchor she is probably just starting out and will probably only be in the area a few years. If this is the case i suggest that she rent somewhere in Boardman or Austintown. Maybe some others who live in the immediate area can comment further.

The only side of Youngstown that is somewhat safe is Cornersburg, the very southwest side. And that area is being pinched more and more. For someone to say the north side is nice or safe boggles my mind. Ysu and 5th ave are somewhat good areas, but that is stretching it. The north side is mostly slum. The west side is well on it's way to being a ghetto. Would you want to walk down Steel St. at 2 AM? I don't think so. Not even 2 PM. How about Wirt st.? Nope. I wouldn't even think about walking on Mahoning ave. or 5th ave. after dark.

I said the North and West sides "aren't as bad". I didn't say they were outstanding or the safest place in the valley to live. If you read my message i said i thought austintown or boardman would probably be her best bet. Geesh!

I live 2 blocks from Steel street, (I have lived in the area for almost 6 years now) and I think you don't know what you're talking about. What do you base your statements on?
If I had the money, I'd love to live on the north side and restore some of the mansions in that "slum."
There is a difference between abandonment/neglect and "ghetto."

I didnt say it was a pro football team. Ohio State has a larger fan base than any Cleveland or Cincinnati pro team. Ohio State brings in more revenue and money than any other pro team in Ohio.
I hope youre not referring to population when you say that Columbus is about half of Cleveland's metro.
Thanks goodness for that. I dont want Columbus to lose 500,000 people in 50 years. While everyone moves out of Cleveland to other places, more people from other places come to Columbus.

Scottie Im not sure what you are talking about with all of your posts on here. The Cleveland/Akron area is much larger than the Columbus msa. The city population doesnt even matter right now since Columbus takes up 3 times the land area that Cleveland does. The Cleveland msa is 3 million, Columbus is 1.9 million (note that the Cleveland msa doesnt even include the Canton area, which is conneted to Akron, or Youngstown, if it did it would add 1.3 million).
Columbus is much less urban than Cleveland also. There are places like 5 miles south, west, and SE of downtown that are farms and cornfields already. Cleveland extends for a long way and its suburbs have a lot more character and history than Columbus does. Also Columbus doesnt even have a rapid transit system. Yes, there is a lot of crime and ghettos especially in Cleveland and East Cleveland but outside of the central cities the Cleveland area is very safe and nice. We have 3 major sports team and Columbus has none. I dont hate Columbus, but I would pick Cleveland over it anyday.

While I agree with everything you said, and believe that all that you said, except for the numbers, can be said for cinci too, Columbus does have 1 pro sports team. They have the Bluejackets, the only NHL team in Ohio. They also have an AFL team is that counts.

Scottie also said the weather is a LOT worse in Cleveland than it is in Columbus...That is also not true. The average temperatures for my hometown (Elyria, 20 miles west of Cleveland) and Columbus are the same. Cleveland is on average 3 degrees colder than Columbus, thats just because of the breeze from the lake. Cleveland gets 55 inches of snow per year and Columbus gets 28, but lets not forget Columbus got over 21 inches of snow from the storm and I live by Cleveland and I only got around 12.
Also, we have a lot more than 1 month to use the parks and beaches. We have 4-5 months that are warm enough most of the time to use the beaches. We had out first 90+ degree in May and had our last one in October. The weather is hardly different at all and Columbus doesnt even have a lake or beaches so I dont know why you would bring that up. Like I said, I like Columbus, but its just dumb to try and say its so much better then Cleveland. I dont understand why everyone tries to bash Cleveland all the time (most of what they say is false or very exaggerated), the people here have to defend it their whole lives. Im just tired of this most the things about Cleveland are great.

People do go too far with the Cleveland bashing. I think it's a nice city with some interesting things about it. But in fairness, much of the exaggeration comes from Clevelanders too. Clevelanders are famous for "bigging" up their city at the cost of others also. You can't tell the average Clevelander they don't live in this all-time sweet city, when in reality it's not. Neither is Columbus, or Cincinnati for that matter, but this is true.
