Am thinking of taking a job in Dayton, but was a bit concerned about the crime rate. Can anyone recommend safe (for a single person) and affordable (for a renter) areas to live?
Thanks. |

I went to look at homes in Dayton proper recently and researched the city. There are some nice homes there and cheap prices. I wanted to like this place. However, I have small kids and a wife to answer to; so, there is no way I could move them there. The schools are all on academic emergency- all of them. To me, when every school in an entire city is bad, it's a reflection of the people/commuity there, not the school itself. You can't fix it by building newer facilities or bringing in better teachers, etc. Additionally, I knew that it has had a very high crime rate going in. After driving around, you could see it. It just has that look of high crime and poverty. Poverty, I don't mind. Crime, I do. It's a shame because the city looks like it was a pretty nice place at one time.
Since your're a single person with no kids, though, I think Patterson Park would be O.K. Lots of rentals and homes are for sale everywhere out there. It seemed like there was a "for rent" or "for sale" sign on every other property. |

If you're looking at Dayton proper, I'd second Patterson Park. Probably one of the quiter areas of town not completly surrounded by blight (Oakwood to the southwest, Kettering south). Otherwise, if you don't mind the suburbs, Kettering and Beavercreek offer a wide range of apartment complexes.

The housing and apartments are not cheap, but it is a safe community where everyone knows everyone. The school district is very good. It is close to I70 & I75, and the 35 connector which will get you downtown. Engelwood is another community that is nice, but getting very crowded. ![]() |
