Default Youngstown and Surrounding Areas

Okay, I've noticed you guys have been very, very useful in this forum, so I decided to post in hopes that you all could help me out as well. I've been doing some research about the Youngstown-Warren area, but my research here in Austin, Texas can only go so far. I don't have the time or money to travel 1500 miles to check out the areas myself, so I'm in dire need of some extra inside help from you guys.

My boyfriend (soon to be fiance) currently lives in Howland, Ohio. Because he has been on supervised release from prison (which is not what he was expecting), he can't move to Texas like he had planned to, so I'm making a sacrifice to move there! I won't be moving for another half a year to a year, but I want to be SURE I know what I'm doing and where I am staying before I get there. The job search I'm still uncertain on as well, but I will be graduating with a degree in Psychology from the University of Texas next year, so if any of you know of any companies that are available in that field, that will be useful as well.

I am searching for apartments anywhere within 15 miles of that area, but I know that these apartment searches are limited. Please help!!! We will only be staying in Ohio for a short time -- a year at the most -- but I really want somewhere to stay that's close to Howland, not too expensive (maybe $650 for rent at the most), and a somewhat newer model apartment complex. If you can help with ANYTHING even just information on the surrounding cities and Youngstown State University, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks for listening!

Check out the suburb of Boardman. Its booming, has everything as far as entertainment goes, and is about 15 minutes down the freeway from Youngstown. Many new condo/apartment complexes going in. Its a nice area.

AKA FLEX is an unknown quantity at this point
Check out the crime rates for Youngstown -- your convict boyfriend will fit right in. Just out of curiosity, how does someone with a college degree who writes like a halfway intelligent person meet a mate in prison??

Default Good Question

Yes, Mr. Flex, I did notice the crime rates in Youngstown, which is also his hometown sadly enough. We're just going to try and avoid that scene as much as possible which is why I'm looking for something "around" that area. Anyone know about the crime rate in Boardman?

You asked: I am not perfect, believe me, and because of this -- and some free time I had acquired over the past couple of months -- I gave myself a new hobby and decided to correspond with people in prison to make their time served a LITTLE bit easier. Crazy? Yea, I know. I'm a very eclectic and unique individual who goes beyond the norms at times.

I wasn't really expecting the transition from a prison penpal to a boyfriend, but I got it because I could not resist his personality. How one could hold such a great attitude about life and have no freedom in such a hell hole was truly amazing to me, and I was astonished and captivated by it. I hope that answers your question AKA FLEX.

Thanks for the info!

The southern and northern suburbs of Youngstown are very nice. Once you leave Youngstown and head for the suburbs, you see a completely different story. And i sure hope you did not feel offended by AKA FLEX's comment.

I hope you will reconsider your decision to relocate to the Youngstown, Ohio area.

Myself and my family moved here in October of 2003 merely for financial reasons and
are very much hoping to leave by mid 2008.

There is nothing good about this section of Ohio, including the so called nicer areas of
Boardman & Poland. The homes may be prettier in the latter, but on the whole, the natural residents
are the same. Being from south eastern NY, we have not been able to relate to anyone here yet.
Sure the people are friendly, but they seem to be so only with each other.
We notice that,they don't.

Rents and mortgages are dirt cheap. However ,compared to the salary you may receive here (that's if you can find a job) prices may be a little high. The prices for houses are laughable and are about up to 6 times less than back home in NY. Rents are in the price range of the 1980's.

If you are still seriously interested and I sincerely hope you are not,
check out the local newspaper. Its actually only useful as a fire starter or for paper mache projects. Its called The Vindicator

We live on the westside of Youngstown, the only decent part of the city. However, if you are into
drive by shootings or running into drug dealers you may like the south, north or east side of the city.

Its easy for us to see all that is wrong with this place.
The locals are blind. Don't let them tell you otherwise.

As far as finding a job in your field, good luck.
Perhaps a school, but even they are closing down.
Make sure you have secured a job before arriving here.

I have heard that many come here simply to get back on their feet, then leave.
That's exactly what we are doing. So in that sense, the state of Ohio is good for something.

I would stay in Texas if I were you.

Hi MJKish,

I live in Howland and it's actually a very nice community.Just a touch of blight where the township borders the city of Warren, but the professionals and business leaders of the county all live in Howland or the next town north, Cortland.

If your psych. degree is just a BA don't expect much in the way of jobs, but that's not just here.

The best advice I could give you : Listen to that voice inside your head that's telling you that pursuing a relationship with this guy is a bad move. You have a big heart, which is why you were a psych major, but you don't realize what BS artists 99.99 % of convicted felons are.

I have a psych degree, worked in corrections for three years, then chose another field.

Good luck to you.

Have you ever heard they saying, "Maybe it's you."?

The people around here are just like the rest of the country. We are friendly to everybody we meet, no matter where they are from. It doesn't take long to decide if we wish to continue being friendly with you.

"Being from south eastern NY, we have not been able to relate to anyone here yet." That was the first warning sign. I have lived all around the country, and have been able to relate to people, and make friends in every place I lived.

"Myself and my family moved here in October of 2003 merely for financial reasons. I have heard that many come here simply to get back on their feet, then leave.
That's exactly what we are doing." That was the second warning sign. For some reason you made some poor financial decisions, and now need to recover from those decisions. I would guess that you have a terrible credit rating too. Unfortunately, you should have chosen a booming area like Nevada, where even somebody with no job skills can find work.

"We live on the westside of Youngstown, the only decent part of the city. However, if you are into
drive by shootings or running into drug dealers you may like the south, north or east side of the city." This is the third warning sign. You actually chose to live in the city. Newsflash. There is no decent side of the city. There were many other good choices, yet you screwed that up too.

You sound like the typical liberal New Yorker that wants to blame everybody except themselves for what went wrong in their lives. I'll predict that no matter where you go, you will find the same unfriendly people that want nothing to do with you. You will then go on the internet and bash them too.

Why? Because it's not us. IT'S YOU!!!!!
