Does anybody know how highway signs on the Ohio Turnpike ended up with square borders instead of the rounded borders we see everywhere else? I haven't seen this ANYWHERE else in America.

My personal opinion is that these turnpike signs are annoying.

Inquiring minds want to know.

This is really interesting and my searches have turned up nothing. This is outlined in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, so the Ohio Turnpike must not be receiving FHWA funds for their signage. I have no idea why they would choose to print them differently, other than it just being a legacy design they haven't bothered to update.

I wonder if there's a transportation board here. If there is, maybe somebody there would know.

I've noticed these signs since I was a kid; I was up in Cleveland last week and saw them again. They have a really weird exit off of I-77 where you can get off (there was an accident), then get back on a few blocks to the north. To get back on, you end up briefly on exit ramps from the Turnpike before you can get back on I-77. That's where I saw these signs again and it kind of jogged my memory.
