Grew up in Lima, Ohio. I've always wondered how much of Lima's crime issues stem from it's being halfway between Toledo and Dayton right on I-75. Probably more to do with the economic collapse in the last 40 years or could just be a combination of variables. Either way Lima is only really dangerous once you get past Metcalf Street. Having grown up there for 22 years and living on the west side of the city I never knew crime. Not even property damage. East and South sides are far more different though.

thanks for the info.
I was wondering why there are so many great buys (houses) in Cleveland 44120, 44118 , 44107. They all seem to "disappear", pending, contingent, etc. quickly ! What's going on ???

Seriously. OP's list isn't even sourced. Of course the most poor/urban areas of the state have the highest crime; that's a national trend.

Neleh, you've received a lot of info and advice in your own thread. Rest assured that nobody is steering you towards living in dangerous ghettos. Two of those zip codes are entirely in the suburbs, and the third is half in the suburbs. "Cleveland" being on this list barely even applies to your situation since you are looking mostly at Cleveland Heights, Lakewood, Shaker Heights, and Shaker Square. Only one of those is in the City of Cleveland, and it's certainly not one of the neighborhoods that's putting Cleveland on this list.

Will note on this I don't think Lima being between Toledo and Dayton have much of anything to do with its crime.

I'm from and live in Toledo and being near Detroit also has nothing to do with our crime.

Most crime in most cities are committed by residents of those cities in particular neighborhoods and for me it is always weird when people try to blame their crime on other cities. Maybe 2-3% can be placed on other folks coming down and committing horrible crimes but other than that, not so much.

On the 2-3% I'll note I remember about a year or two ago that a woman moved back to Toledo from Memphis, TN and was staying with family here and our PD got a tip that her longtime boyfriend who she had left (with their children) was looking to kill her and the kids. They got the kids and the mother to a safe space (ETA: I have a great admiration and appreciation for our local PD in Toledo they are one of the most professional departments that I've ever interacted with - I actually am not afraid of them like I have been in other places I've lived. I also believe our high crime rates are in relation to the fact that Toledo PD are very good at compiling and not lying about crime like they do in other cities do). The guy came and went on a crime spree through Toledo - shot at people, assaulted them, stole cars, went on a high speed chase through the city!! It was crazy! I remember it caused a lot of headaches for me leaving work that day and all the sirens going off I was wondering what was going on! That is a part of Toledo's crime even though the guy came up from Memphis and went on a crime spree. There was a similar situation that was not as severe that included a criminal on the run from Detroit being caught here in Toledo. But these are rare occurrences where someone from another city comes and commits crimes.

I honestly don't put a lot of weight into "most dangerous" lists as all crimes, even violent crimes are not the same and statistics can be misleading on what is really going on.

I'll note, I've not dealt with any crime in Toledo since moving back here at all and I live in what is considered a criminally prone area. However, I do have extended family members who are involved in a life of crime - gang bangers/crews sorts of lifestyles and they do often fight and often times kill each other and go around doing horrible things in our city. Gangs are not as easy to fight anymore like they used to be because there is no organized network. Most crime today is intra-relation crime meaning - crimes that occur between parties who know each other in regards to violent crime in particular or who are rivals in some way. Theft and such has always been an issue in Toledo though and since moving back (I hadn't lived here permanently since the late 1990s/early 00s) I think crime here is much better than it used to be in this regard and in regards to violence.

This is a bit reductive of an explanation so don't chew my head off too much fellow Ohioans, but I'm going to assume caliguy is from California... Imagine if the city limits of Los Angeles was just the south side. The city's crime statistics would suddenly look very different simply by changing some lines on the map. Now obviously I love Ohio's cities and they have some stellar neighborhoods, but in many cases, the "nice" areas aren't within city limits, which makes crime look worse.

Default Cleveland Safety

Hello All,

I'm considering moving to the Cleveland area from NYC. Advice and suggestions for areas to AVOID due to high crime rates would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Read through the Cleveland forum, then post questions there, providing your living preferences, price range, and employer and/or location.
