I am an Austintown native. Let me make some corrections...

The high school is not new, it was built several years ago. The middle school is the newest building in the school district. The township (not city) of Austintown has a small park used mostly for sports.

Yes, the highschool is over 40 years old now. And, the middle school is very new. (This was their first year in the building.)

Default Humidity in Youngstown?

While there are some Youngstown area residents on this board, can someone tell me if it's horribly humid in summer in your area? I live in Minnesota, where it's pretty humid in the summer, but nothing like Florida or the rest of the south, or course.

It can be humid for parts of the summer. We'll have a couple weeks of hot, hazy weather. Then a storm front will move through, and it will be in the 70's/80's and dry for a couple weeks. Then it will become humid again for a couple weeks, and so on.

--edit--

This is my opinion, and I haven't experienced full summer humidity in other areas of the US to know whether the humidity in NE Ohio is bettwr or worse.

It definitely gets humid here in the summer, but it's more like 80 or 85 degrees w/a dew point of 60 or something like that, it's not that hot and humid everyday. My brother lives on the North Carolina Coast and it's a lot more hot and humid there.

Out of all the summer months i would say July and August are the worst for humidity, where may and june are more comfortable. A lot of people around here complain about all the overcast or cloudy skys we have here, but i would rather have less sun w/the heat and humidity than all three conditions combined.

Thanks for your responses regarding the humidity. In Minnesota, the dewpoint is often in the high sixties and even lower seventies. From what I can tell, you have earlier springs, later falls, and milder winters. That all appeals to me. As recently as last week, it snowed here. My grass is green, but NOTHING is blooming yet. The trees will probably be in full bloom by June 1st, and start turning in September. It makes for a pretty short summer, and a long, cold winter.

In response to diamondd213, I can get depressed anywhere. I think that some of the residents of the Youngstown area focus too much on the negative, not realizing that many of the problems you have, you'd be having anywhere you live. What's the point of living in a vivbrant, booming city, if you can't afford to buy a house? I'm going to retire soon. If I stay in the Minneapolis area, what I can afford would be a crummy condo, or a house for $175,000 in a neighborhood that's the same as your near-south. There's not a neighborhood I'd live in in Minneapolis or St. Paul without having an alarm system.

I've been to Youngstown, I've read all the posts on Vindy.com, and all the blogs. The bottom line is: it CAN'T be as bad as people portray or no one would live there. I have a much greater chance of being robbed or randomly shot in Minneapolis than I would in Youngstown. I'll take my chances in Youngstown.

Our dew point can get that high. But, I think it's only during the most extreme spells of humidity.

We had a frost warning last week. But, most of our flowering trees are in bloom now, and almost all trees have their leaves.

Somewhat related to what diamondd213 said above, if you're going to live in Youngstown, you shouldn't be too concerned about what others think. I love my house and my neighborhood, and my close proximity to the park. But, many in the area think I'm crazy for living in "big bad" Youngstown. But, I've never cared much about what others think.

Good for you! I think it's important to research an area before considering moving to it, but at the end of the day, I'm the only one who can decide what's best for me, based on what my priorities are. I'm OK with people having different opinions, but it's the absolute statements like "Youngstown is a cesspool", or "it should all be bulldozed", that serve no purpose.

Not everyone is depressed.......i'm not and neither are any of my friends and family. Yes the economy is depressed, but if you have a good job it's a great place to live, IMO. Besides, things are beginning to turn around...........if you don't believe me read these blogs:

The only people that are depressed are those that will be depressed where ever they go. As I've gotten older, I've come to realize every place is the same. If you've lived in Youngstown your whole life, maybe you're just itching to see more of the world. While I no longer live in the Youngstown area, I grew up there and lived there for 18 years. By the time I left, I was ready to get out, however, after seeing more of the world I've realized how much I love Youngstown and how it's a great area. Yes, the job market may not be great there, however, they are working on it and Youngstown is beginning to become a technology hub.
