My initial reaction was "Why Mansfield?"

My wife has a number of cousins who have rehabbed some off the old Victorians around Park Ave. The problem is getting a house that is not too far gone is not real cheap and after you spend a year rehabbing it, it is hard to get any money out of the property as the Mansfield public schools are considered the pits.

You can pick up a cheap 2 br anywhere around town but you are going to have little chance to make any money after making it habitable.

You would almost be better to look at older homes in smaller towns in the area - Bellville, Shelby, Mt. Vernon, Lexington. Or if you are more adventurous, find an old farm house in Richland or Wayne Co.

First, to clear up Mermaidtail's confusion, the Oprah show unnecessarily abused Mansfield's reputation. I lived in Mansfield for 18 years, and drug use is not nearly as prevalent as that show made it seem. The truth is: Drug problems exist everyone in the United States. Mansfield provided but one example.
Any concern of racism or drug use should NOT be a concern to anyone considering a move to Mansfield. Are you planning to move to the ghettos of downtown Mansfield? Surely not. There are many neighborhoods that are very safe and family friendly: I, for example, grew up in Madison Township, and there are kids running around safely everywhere! There are homes off of Lexington Avenue and off of Millsboro Rd that I would feel quite lucky to live in.
I would be much more concerned about hillbillies than racism. I honestly believe that the biggest problem facing Mansfield is the high rate of uneducated and often unemployed whites. It does make going to a bar or restaurant an interesting experience. I like to play a game called: "Count the Nascar shirts" but there are also many educated white-collar residents as well.
It is a fine place to raise a family with plenty of shopping, restaurants and things to do at your disposal. Parks, lakes, rivers, skiing, are within 20 minutes and Columbus and Cleveland are just over an hour away.

In those towns where you have had a large union presence, you will find that education is devalued. I mean, why spend a ton to go to college when you can go to the plant, make a ton of money and not work too hard and come out ahead? I encountered a number of people in Richland County who want to blame their lack of preparation for the new economy for all their woes.

While I am tempted to blame the schools - and Mansfield Public are among the worst, I have seen the same tendency at places like Clear Fork and Lexington.

I lived in Mansfield from when I was 7 to 17. I'm 19 now living in Columbus. Mansfield is not a dangerous city, but it is not the safest. However, many of the things said in this thread have been completely absurd. The blacks in Mansfield do not hate whites, at least most of them don't. Most of my friends growing up in Mansfield were black and that statement was definitely not true. There are only two parts of Mansfield that I consider to be "bad". One part is the projects on King Street and Burns Street. I was once robbed there and consider myself to be a very street smart, cautious person. The other are is Little Kentucky, north of Route 30. There isn't much violence there but it is home to hella racism and some of the rudest people I have EVER met. The Westside is a lower income area, however it is not particularly dangerous, with perhaps the exception of 5th street. The Brinkherhoff and Ranchwood areas are nice, diverse, middle class areas.

Overall I wouldn't recommend moving here, but it is not as bad as one might think.

[LEFT]I have lived in Mansfield for most of my life. I finally moved from there about a year ago and I will tell you it was the best thing I have ever done. It is horrible. No jobs, gangs, and plenty of drugs. Not to mention the poor police department and elected city officials. By far, per capita, one of the worst places I have ever lived. Just to give you an example, after I moved to my new location I had left most of my belongings in my old home, mind you, with neighbors on all four sides, one within seven feet of one side, my house was robbed and vandalized severly. Best part of it all is nobody heard or saw anything. NOBODY. Police did nothing at all, not even a fingerprint, community watch block leader lives directly across the street from my house. Now mind you, my house is so damaged that I am going to sign it over to the city because of the amount of damage. On youtube type in Mansfield Ohio and watch the one entitled "and this wasn't even the worst part". You'll get my point and good luck with your search for a place to move to. Hope this was helpful!

Everybody and his dog is educated these days. Truck driving is getting more college educated industry every year. Let's all get educated and push papers around because obviously nobody else but paper pushers and managers deserve decent pay.

Have you been to a plant? I've been today, smell of paint and chemicals almost knocked me out, people work there for $8/hr (Louisiana) and breathe all of that, many don't speak Englese. An hour of their life is as valuable to them as an hour of your life is valuable to you, you don't sell your education, you sell hours of your life (health, freedom, dignity, etc. on top of that). yet their $8/hr will not pay for their medications later on in their lives.

The fact that our system can force people in the positions endangering their lives and health for $8/hr while JP Morgan cannot seems find employee willing to work without multi-millions bonuses in the end of a year is telling by itself. You can tell all day long an "uneducated" person breathing crap 9+ hrs each day that's what he deserves because he's not smart, educated, inventive, productive, doesn't like classic music and opera ... so he must breathe the crap to provide goodies to much better people, yet, a person with a choice would kindly suggest an educated moron to go f..k himself. Because he value his life as much as that snob values his. A person without a choice will go in to breathe toxic chemical perfume for $8/hr. And that's the point of any hierarchical master-slave system.

I would assume that an "educated" person would see through this education crap extensively being used by corporate puppet masters to justify race to the bottom. People without education are being told that they are not worth much because of lack of education on their part (really? let's imagine world without them, I can imagine world without JP Morgan just fine), people with a B.S. are being told that M.S. is a ticket to paradise, people with M.S. are being told that Ph.D. is covered with gold, people with a Ph.D. are being told that "they are over educated and under skilled" or that they will be "bored" with a job and thus should move along. Regardless of a degree all are being told that their education is not current or emphasis of their studies is little bit off. It's always something.

The point is that top 10% own 90% of nation' wealth, bottom 40% own 0.4% of nation's wealth. The point is that absolute minority rules majority. The cheapest way for a minority to maintain control and 90% of wealth is to transform majority in their own jailers. All permeating "it's all about education" mantra serves this purpose just fine, everybody blames himself for not having education or for not having the right kind of education while giant sucking sound of 90% of nations wealth being sucked to the top is not heard.

Sure, education can be valuable in increasing your wage slaving value. Yet, education is not a straight arrow path to a higher income/social perch. Education becomes more and more riskier investment. The riskier it gets the harder university and government employed marketeers push it. But social control value remains strong, regardless of the bleaker reality.
