Day definitely has established his recruiting prowess by signing both Zach Harrison and Justin Fields, two of the highest ranked recruits in Ohio State football history.

George Pickens, a top receiver recruit who plays on the same 7-on-7 team as Justin Fields, reportedly now is considering Ohio State.

It also will be interesting to see how Day shores up the defensive coaching assistant ranks in an effort to avoid the likes of the Iowa and Purdue losses in coming seasons.

Alex Grinch resigned to become the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma.

Rumors have defensive coaches and star recruiters Marcus Freeman, Cincinnati Bearcat defensive coordinator, and Al Washington, now Michigan's linebacker coach, joining Ryan Day's staff.

Freeman was a star linebacker at Ohio State as an undergrad.

As both Freeman and Washington both specialize in linebackers, perhaps Day will have to decide between the two.

Default Ryan hires Michigan linebacker coach Al Washington

Washington reportedly is an excellent recruiter.

Default Day attacks Michigan's recruiting jugular

Day has said that the elderly Greg Mattison was added to the staff as a defensive coordinator to impart his vast knowledge on Jeff Hafley and other defensive coaching newcomers not named Larry Johnson, and, by implication, to eliminate the defensive lapses that contributed so greatly to the disastrous losses at Iowa and Purdue under Urban Meyer's defensive brain trust. Any recruiting help from Mattison will just be a bonus.

Without doubt, however, Meyer has been emphasizing to Day that recruiting prowess is job number one. Al Washington in particular is apparently a recruiting superstar.

Default Right Amount of Crazy?

Is Ryan Day sufficiently self-motivated to excel as Ohio State's head football coach?

Default Day completes coaching staff

The overhauled defensive coaching staff will have the goal of eliminating a repeat of the Iowa or Purdue losses in 2019. Ryan Day's 2019 coaching staff now appears complete.

Curious to find out if he encouraged Tate Martell to transfer. It's good if he did. Tate's a good QB, but his run-first style may not fit Day's pass-happy offense.

Default National title prospects in 2019/20?

Transfer Justin Fields has been ruled eligible for the upcoming football season. Combined with the veteran-heavy roster and the wholesale replacement of the defensive coaching staff that struggled in 2018 and 2019 with losses to Iowa and Purdue, the 2019 season should offer Ohio State a good shot at a national title as Justin Fields likely is the best quarterback prospect in Ohio State history.

I'm going to venture a guess that this will be the least surprising news of the offseason for Coach Day. He put all of the team's eggs in Fields' basket when he (likely) encouraged Tate Martell to transfer. I don't think he would have made the QB switch if he didn't think Fields was a lock to get his transfer waiver approved.

I've seen no evidence that Day encouraged Tate Martell to transfer. It's most likely that Martell was given an honest assessment of the situation by the coaching staff and told he was more than welcome to stay and compete with Fields. Martell, seeing the writing on the wall, understandably chose to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

It will be interesting to see if Martell gains immediate eligibility at Miami.
