Lot of money has been made. Probably a bunch of good jobs in the industry if you have the right experience. Lots of drilling going on all over SE Ohio, they are finding it much deeper than thought possible. Lots of need for your typical jobs that support an oil / gas industry. Drilling all kinds of wells behind my house. Peeps making a good living at it.
That and the select timber industry. Lots of nice timber in Ohio. Has some of the more desirable wood. If a person could get a self employed business based around that industry can be a nice way to make a living. The Amish do it all over SE Ohio. Lot of nice timber going for export to China and where ever. That is not going to change. Upscale furniture, cabinets, whatever made from wood business could be very good. In this area of the World they burn for firewood better timber than many places have for making wood products.
The opportunities are still in Ohio, you just have to know where to find them. Play to the strengths and ignore the weaknesses.

Thanks for the post and for the information. I didn't know that. Ohio gets a bad rap I know but anywhere you go there are complaints and problems. People come to Alaska thinking it is their dream place only to find out shortly afterward they don't like the winters or can't find work. Too many people are actually moving up here so what you end up with are crowded roads, etc. The beauty of the place is no longer enough to hold me; I miss my family and want to be able to see them more then one time per year. So to those who post about Alaska vs. Ohio they aren't taking into account a whole lot of things. Thank you for your encouragement and information. I appreciate it.

Yep, Alaska does sound a whole lot more exciting then Ohio doesn't it. However, bear this in mind: If you have family in the midwest you are bout 4000 miles away. An expensive airline ticket, about 10 hours of air travel time to get home once per year. Our winters are long and dark uphere with LOTS of ice underneath the snow that stays virtually all winter. A treacheorus highway with complete idiots (including Californians, Floridians, etc.) who don't have a clue how to drive in ice and snow.
Today (April 25th) lol it is snowing. Not all that unusual up here, but it's really coming down. Past week we had beautiful spring weather.
Toooo many people have moved up here and are moving up here. The town we live in has now become crowded; traffic on the highway for the commute to good work (50 miles one way) can be a real pain in the butt. People moving uphere who want to change it to be like the place they left, all this politically correct bull. Alaska has limited road space up here.
Many have come up here seeking the exciting American dream; not always so. Anchorage has gangs and crime. If people don't have a job waiting before they get here they can end up homeless real quick. Not all the jobs like they think; many think the pipeline is still being built lol.
So just keep in mind that although Alaska is beautiful with it's mountains, lakes and streams, and wildneress, there are problems just like anywhere else.
I want no part of Cleveland where I was born/raised due to the crime, the leadership and lack of jobs. I am seeking a smaller type town.
My mother was very ill 2-1/2 years ago. I was so afraid she'd die before I got to Conn. to where she was living. I made it but she died a month later. I have a friend whose mom died by the time she made the plane trip home to Michigan. Unless you are one of the people uphere who has their whole family here you can start to feel very isolated. So just wanted to make a point that Alaska is not all what it seems to be.

Ya OH is one of the places to be indeed... if your an oil and/or gas company ! If you want to be a driller, no problem there either. Just plop down about $4-$5 million on a drilling rig and start drilling away. Excellent prospects if you have millions laying around and know the industry.
Yes there is a lot of drilling going on by established drilling companies that have more help than they can use. And if any of these drillers should happen to need additional help, they hire an outsider with actual rig experience through their established "channels" that they work in. It's not like getting a job at McDonalds...
Timber cutting... another great business if you have the funds to start up. Funding for a simple small logging outfit to startup alone can run you about $1 mill. Lets not forget the CASH needed to pay for the timber your going to cut and operating expenses. Your cash turn over is not like McDonalds either. Now if you have a network like the Amish, then you cut your expenses tremendously. And everyone makes fun at the Amish ... humm, if anyone has gotten it right they have !

Great post! More people need to see it like this. NO ONE PLACE IS PERFECT. EVERYWHERE is going to have its share of problems. Alaska is a great place. Its just too cold for me.
Ohio has a great future ahead of it. The facts show it. We have a great govenor in place right now, we have a booming medical based economy, some of the best hospitals in the world, tech companies are flocking to Ohio because of how cheap it is here, the GREEN energy is another prospect to Ohio, esp along the Lake Erie coast.
In the next decade Ohio will be one of the best states for starting a business because we will be one of the most business friendly states. Things are going to look up.
I wish you the best of luck on what you choose for the move.

Yes it is so true that people will move to another State and then decide it has the same problems they left. There is no perfect place, if there was, we'd all be there. Alaska does have its' problems and so many come here thinking it is the "perfect" place only to be surprised. Thanks so much for your encouragement.

Bottom line, I think that you should move to Ohio, there's no doubt about that. Your family here is important. As far as my original post to you, I meant that if I had a choice of Alaska or Ohio, I would be in Ohio.

Again, I don't know who these people are that moved to Alaska thinking it was the "perfect" place. The only people that I personally know that moved to Alaska moved from the East Coast because they got some free government land. I don't know if they're even still living there anymore.

The homesteading ended I believe in the late 50's. No more free land; once in a while one of the really really isolated places will offer something like that, but heck, not where I want free land lol. Alot of people are moving here thinking they are escaping taxes and the pains of the city life. Even though we don't have a State Tax our food is higher cause its flown in.
