See posts 17 and 21 in this thread for a discussion of the COVID-19 virus and how it may impact, now and in coming weeks, Ohio. We are lucky that we didn't have any positive confirmation tests for the virus in Ohio before the oncoming ramp-up of U.S. testing capacity.

https://www.city-data.com/forum/flor...florida-3.html

Gov. Mike DeWine already has banned spectators from the Arnold sports event in Columbus. Concern now is that spectators will be banned from all sporting events, including NCAA basketball tournaments, NBA, NHL, and perhaps even MLB games, in coming weeks.

Surely, if spectators are banned from sporting events, other large gatherings of people, including conventions, also will be cancelled.

I guess I should get to Costco and stock up. I've not yet purchased a cache of hand sanitizers and swipes effective against viruses to clean shoes and other potentially contaminated objects when venturing forth in public....

It only stays active on surfaces for a few seconds. You can not get this virus unless you ingest
it, such as someone close to you sneezes or coughs on you. The best way to prevent getting
the virus is to wash your hands and not put your hands on your face and stay away from
coughing or sneezing people.

The first paragraph of this post appears completely wrong, as emphasized on all coverage of COVID-19.

<<How long the new coronavirus can live on a soft surface — and more importantly, how easy or hard it is to spread this way — isn’t clear yet. So far, available evidence suggests it can be transmitted less easily from soft surfaces than frequently-touched hard surfaces, such as a doorknob or elevator button.
According to the WHO, coronaviruses may survive on surfaces for just a few hours or several days, although many factors will influence this, including surface material and weather.>>

One item that few persons likely own that they might want to buy in the near future are lightweight, washable gloves. They may be a better protection against contracting a virus than a face mask.

<<You’re inside of a public conveyance, do you really want to hold on with your bear hand onto a strap in a subway or bus, whatever, probably not. I wear a glove when I use the subway. Things that people don’t think about as being contaminated like the, you know, remote control when you go to a hotel. These things are never cleaned up. When I fly, I wipe down all surfaces.>>

Wow - what? If you touch your face with gloves, that's JUST like touching your face with your hands, assuming both have been in the same place recently.

Obviously. I think the presumption is that you remove the gloves once out of the public, and perhaps that it's easier to avoid touching your face when wearing gloves.

Default Ohio State eliminates in-person classes through March 30

Ohio State announced late Monday that it was suspending in-person classes at least through March 30. This action may impact similar decisions on other Ohio campuses and even about whether to allow spectators at Ohio professional sporting events, as well as at the MAC and March Madness tournaments scheduled for Cleveland in coming days.

<<Ohio State has suspended face-to-face instruction effective immediately due to the coronavirus outbreak until at least Monday, March 30, according to a universitywide email. >>

https://www.thelantern.com/2020/03/o...irus-outbreak/

This follows on the decision of Gov. Mike DeWine to ban spectators from many of "The Arnold" sporting events hosted annually by Columbus and to cancel The Arnold's large expo.

https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus...d-despite.html

Although three COVID-19 cases were confirmed Monday in Cuyahoga County, no cases have yet been confirmed as of Monday at Ohio State or elsewhere in Columbus.

Ohio State joins a growing list of other universities that are implementing similar preemptive measures. Ohio State may possess internet instructional capabilities lacking at other universities, including other Ohio state university campuses.

Ohio asks universities to go to remote learning; wants limits on sports due to coronavirus

Quote:
Health experts want Ohio's universities to go to remote learning due to the new coronavirus, Gov. Mike DeWine said Tuesday. They also want Indoor sports events to be held without spectators except for parents.
The article goes on to say that they're not recommending the closure of K-12 schools yet, but that parents and school officials should prepare for that possibility.

Default 1 percent Ohio rate now estimated; peak seen late April, early May

Ohio's experts believe that already 1 percent, or 117,000, of Ohio's 11.7 million residents are infected by COVID-19.

<<As of Thursday, it’s believed 1% of Ohio’s 11.7 million residents have coronavirus.
Public health officials came up with the estimate due to the second confirmed person getting infected through “community spread.">>

https://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/...ke-dewine.html

A late April, early May peak currently is anticipated.

<<“Some of the early modeling is suggesting that potentially there could be a late April, early May peak to this," Acton said. "But we don’t have all the data.”>>

DeWine wants to avoid overwhelming hospitals with COVID-19 patients, especially given not only limited intensive care units, but more especially ventilators. In Italy, reportedly, doctors are triaging patients to try to devote limited resources to those most likely to recover with treatment.
