Hawthorne Ave. in Lorain is in one of the nicer neighborhoods. That is west of downtown and near the lake and the beach. The neighborhood is pretty nice.

Im not too sure about the First congregational church, I think thats downtown its probably nice.

OOPS! I should have been more specific...I meant Hamilton in Lorain! My bad. It does show it just south of what appears to be old dowtown? Looks like it is a straight shot to the main street running parallel with the lake.

Oh, in that case...Hamilton Ave. in Lorain between 400-700 is about average for Lorain. Its right next to downtown and is in the middle of Lorain. Its not that nice but its not that bad, livable but I dont know a whole lot about that area. I will say its one of the nicer "more urban" areas in Lorain.

Thanks Cle440! Appreciate the info and opinion. The wife was born in Lorain, her heart is set on returning soon, even tho it's been 50 years since she stepped foot in Ohio. We are considering doing the opposite of most, moving from Arizona to the midwest and cold country. Of course we are absolutely blown away by the old houses and the ridiculously low prices! Where we live cheap doublewides on a barren acre of desert go for at least 125,000 and up. Anymore opinion or advice...please feel free to input, we need all we can get!

Wow, 50 years is a long time. Things have changed a ton since then. Sadly, with Lorain most of the change was for the bad. Lorain isnt that nice of a place anymore. Its had bad gang problems for the past 25 years, the schools arent that nice, unemployment rate is high, the poverty rate is very high at 27%. The steel mill went from 12,000 jobs decades ago to now around 2,000. Lorain High and Lorain Catholic high are both closed now and they are even thinking of merging Admiral King and Southview. Things have not been going good in Lorain and a lot of South Lorain and Central Lorain along with a few other areas are in pretty bad condition.
Sorry to paint such a bad picture, but you have either heard this or will hear it a lot when you get here. However there is still nice neighborhoods in Lorain like most the Eastside, the Far Westside, Southwest Lorain, and any place within a few blocks of the lake. Also the area west of downtown near the beach is still very nice. And there is still very nice warm people in Lorain as always.

Parma is much safer than either Elyria or Lorain. The housing prices are similar for a decent area. Any low priced home in Lorain or Elyria will be in a bad area. Parma also has better schools, although they are not excellent. If you will be working in Cleveland you will also have a much shorter commute, with good public trasportation available to fight the high gas prices. Parma gets a bad rap, but it is really a very pleasant, safe place to live.
